About me and my therapy practice
I imagine you have arrived here because something in your life is a struggle. Indeed, it can feel very hard to reach out for help. It is not always easy to talk openly to friends and family. Sometimes when we do, it does not feel enough. In therapy however, which offers you a unique space and relationship to work through your problems, we can untangle the knots that are within and help you find a path to something that feels more peaceful.
It may be that you feel the need to address experiences from the past or present, or anxiety about the future. You may have suffered a loss. You may have experienced trauma. It may be that you find yourself suddenly struggling with day-to-day life, work, or relationships.
The ways that we learned to survive and cope in the past are often helpful in the moment. This approach can work in the short term, allowing us to feel like we are moving on and that we are in control. However, there often comes a time when it stops working, our feelings start to break through, and often overwhelm us.
Counselling is not a cure-all. It doesn’t work for every problem, or every situation. This being said, it can give you a unique lens and space to focus on your life, your self and your relationships and start to untangle the knots that build up in our lives. It can help us find new ways of being and relating to ourselves and others.
Our work together can help you to step away from judging yourself, and finding self-compassion and acceptance. In doing so, we become more free to move through the world, our relationships and ourselves in the way we want and need. This allows us to grow and thrive towards a more peaceful state of being.
Practice description
I am a fully qualified integrative counsellor. I work from a humanistic core, which means that I keep you at the centre of our work. However, I do not believe that therapy is a one-size-fits-all process. We are all unique, and different therapeutic approaches may feel more akin to you than others. Being an integrative therapist means that I can draw on a number of approaches and skills in our work together. These are integrated seamlessly, allowing us to work in a way that feels right for you.
I believe the counselling experience and the relationship between client and counsellor is unique. The focus is solely on you, without agenda or intention beyond hearing and helping you.
Trust and understanding are therefore essential, to balance and allow for the vulnerability and depth that often comes from our time together. To invite and foster this relationship, I offer a compassionate, open, and accepting space. In this space, you are free to bring your whole self. Developing a trusting relationship and being aware of what is happening between us is vital for effective therapy.
We will work on understanding the situation that you need support with and look at how it is impacting on your life. We can identify patterns and themes, and discover how to change them. Talking therapy can improve your self-awareness and insight, and in doing so, this will help you feel differently about yourself and you move in the world.
I have experience working with many different problems, including anxiety, low mood, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, abuse and trauma, amongst others. I have a particular interest in fertility-related issues and childhood sexual abuse.
I offer 50 minute sessions, both face-to-face and online. This can be either in my home-practice, or at the Stephenson Centre in Ipswich. Please contact me for more details. If if would be helpful, I also offer a free initial 20 minute consultation over the phone or video conference.
