About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Shaun. I am new to Ipswich and am originally from Brighton - I am a person-centred counsellor and will meet you with genuine understanding and acceptance, in a confidential and safe space. I understand how difficult it can be to reach out for help - so I want to make doing so, as stress free for you as I can.
I have worked with a range of diverse adult clients throughout the UK and abroad, with many presenting issues and goals for therapy. I keep up to date with evidence based research and am a registered member of the BACP, receiving regular monthly supervision.
I hold a foundation degree in person centred counselling and am currently completing a BSc in the same subject.
My own experience of living with a mental health diagnosis spurred my vision to become a counsellor and support those who may be going through similar struggles. I believe these experiences enhance how I am able to meet others with authenticity and compassion.
I have been involved with the South West London & St., George’s (SWLSTG) NHS Mental Health Trust since 2015, where I design and facilitate recovery groups on the Adult National and Specialist Service for treatment resistant OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) - This is a tertiary mental health care service.
I am facilitator for Brighton and Hove's OCD, BDD and Hoarding Disorder support group.
I have worked for West Sussex Mind as a mental health worker in the crisis prevention team - my role was supporting service users in crisis with strategic and interpersonal support, signposting, safety and well-being planning and advocacy in collaboration with multi-agency mental health community teams - this helped me to develop my resilience and knowledge of mental health services - I currently work for Mid and North East Essex Mind performing a virtually identical role.
Additionally, I have spoken about mental health publicly and in the national media, at national conferences, and for various charities.
Practice description
I will work with you with respect, warmth and a desire to help you achieve your goals, offering a therapeutic relationship based on my lived experience and training. I will aim to understand you with whatever it might be that you choose to bring and whichever directions you would like to take in the work.
I am able to provide short term counselling of between 2-20 sessions, and long term open ended work.
I will strive to adjust the work in ways that you find helpful and meaningful - I will check in with you regularly to see how you're experiencing the work.
I have worked with a range of clients with presenting issues such as anxiety, depression, social anxiety and the obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD's).
Additionally, I have worked with a variety of people who do not have a formal diagnosis, such as those experiencing bereavement, family and other relationship issues. I am able to work toward what is meaningful to you and feel that my person-centred values and beliefs optimise how I am able to be inclusive of difference and diversity.
It is important for me to treat you with the utmost respect on your journey, and view you as the best source of knowledge in your life. With this as the foundation, I will strive to work authentically with you toward your personal goals.
My first session
During our initial sessions together I would like to get to know and make you feel comfortable. Together, we will identify your goals and aims for counselling. I will offer Carl Rogers core conditions of congruence, empathy and unconditional positive regard, as I believe that these form the foundations for effective therapy.
During this time, we will establish the direction you would like to take in the work - I will work in partnership with you to clarify this.
Throughout our time together, I will ask you to feedback to me how you are experiencing counselling, so that I can ensure I am meeting your expectations and goals.
I believe that different people require different things at different times - when working with clients, I have found that some like more input from me, and others less - during our early sessions, we will clarify an understanding in order to work to an approach that is tailored for you.
