About me and my therapy practice
Everyone has ‘mental health’ and at points in our lives it can be better or worse. Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed. It’s not a sign of weakness or illness. It’s a normal part of being human.
I am a person-centred therapist, which you can find out more about here, https://www.bacp.co.uk/about-therapy/types-of-therapy/person-centred-counselling/. But in essence, my job is to listen carefully and to respond honestly, and without judgement, whilst you talk. In doing so, I’ll help you to get out what’s going on inside, so we can explore it and understand it better. And the better you understand yourself, the more you can untangle things, see patterns and move forward.
Here is how one of my clients describes how the work that we've done together has helped him:
I cannot speak highly enough of Kirsty's support following a challenging period of work-related burnout. With her guidance, the process of navigating my professional challenges became not only manageable but transformative. Kirsty's approach is marked by its insightfulness and sincerity. Through thoughtful discussions, she has helped me dissect and understand my relationship with my job, identify negative habits, and implement positive changes in my lifestyle.
What sets Kirsty apart is her ability to surface practical insights that are beneficial in the therapy room and also in my day-to-day life. Her supportive and empathetic nature creates an environment where I feel comfortable exploring and addressing issues that affect my well-being.
Thanks to Kirsty's expertise, I've overcome the burnout while developing a deeper understanding of myself, and have acquired some tools to maintain a healthier work-life balance. I am immensely grateful for her role in my journey towards personal and professional wellbeing. Kirsty's influence extends to many positive changes that are making a lasting difference.
Practice description
I work with whatever is ailing people, but often my work revolves around grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship and work issues and health concerns.
I aim to be as flexible as possible with clients both in terms of how we work together and for how long.
Sessions can be online, over the 'phone or face-to-face. You don't need to stick to the same way of doing things either: sometimes you might prefer to meet face-to-face and at other times it may be more convenient to have our session online. If you would like to meet face-to-face, I work in both the Southside and centre of Glasgow.
Sometimes one or two sessions will be enough to help someone through a difficult period, other times people come to therapy for several months or longer. Many others are in between the two. You can also stop and start again if you feel you need to. It's important to do what's right for you and this is something we can discuss as we work together.
My first session
There’s lots of evidence to suggest that the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor in the success of therapy. Of course, like any relationship, it can take time to develop, but it’s important that you have some sense that you could be comfortable and open with a particular therapist before you commit to working with them. So, initially I’d suggest a half-hour session free of charge online or over the ’phone for you to see if you feel you could work with me. During this session we'd talk about what brings you to therapy and how you hope it can help. It will also give you a chance to ask any questions before making your decision.
