About me and my therapy practice
Everyone needs support at some stage in their life. There may be specific issues or life events that challenge us or a more general sense of going in the wrong direction, being stuck, uncertain or unhappy. In an age of increasing busy-ness, it can be easy to experience that our sense of ourself is defined by circumstances beyond our control.
For whatever reason you are looking at this today, speaking with a counsellor can open new perspectives, increase self-awareness and build a stronger identity where problems are faced and alternative strategies evolve. Exploring your concerns in a compassionate space may cast light on habits of thought, behaviour and feeling that have ceased to be useful; once we recognise and understand patterns in which we get caught, we make more of a choice about whether we want to continue them.
Together we can explore what's going on for you, understand more about yourself, your ways of coping and the challenges you are facing. I'm versatile and responsive. It can be enough to talk, hear yourself out loud and be understood by someone else. If it's useful to you, we might work with creative techniques, like drawing or writing, or we might explore how you experience emotion in your body as well as your mind.
I work non-judgementally, compassionately and collaboratively. The most important aspect of my practice is you, as you are and as you would like to be. I believe everyone possesses potential for change and the strength to grow beyond adversity, in whatever form that takes.
Practice description
I am a qualified Humanistic and Integrative counsellor (F.D. and PG. Dip. Counselling and Psychotherapy) which means I work in a person-centred way, integrating a number of authorised approaches to inform my practice. I am a registered member of The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their ethical framework.
I have particular experience in the following areas:
Anxiety
Depression
Stress
Relationships
Family
Bereavement
ADHD
Autism
OCD
Transitional life events
Life-altering illness
In addition to my private practice, I am a counsellor with the NHS, based at Sussex Cancer Centre working with people affected by cancer directly and as caregivers or family members.
I have a background of 25 years in teaching English and education which, at its best, is also about connection, relationships, engagement and, most importantly, people. This means I am also keen to support those working within educational institutions with the challenges that both studying, and teaching, can bring..
