About me and my therapy practice
About me
I’m really good at helping people who are stuck on problems either get past them or come to terms with them. 🙂 Don’t just take my word for it.
I am non-binary (they/them) and work with all sorts of people including clients from the LGBTQ+ community; clients with autism and ADHD; and with clients who are questioning whether they belong in those groups. 🙂 Allies always welcome. 🙂
I do: listen to you and help identify your feelings. Suggest mental models to help you understand yourself better. You can, and should, tell me when I get it wrong!:)
I don’t: give advice or diagnose you. Ask you questions to satisfy my curiosity or “force” you to do things.
If you have had previous bad experiences of therapy I hope to be worthy of your trust.
Since 2019 I’ve worked with a number of charities including Chrysalis (Gender Identity Matters) (now Beyond Reflections), a local grassroots organisation which as part of its work sponsors me to improve people’s mental health through counselling and EBS (formerly Eastleigh Bereavement Services) to help people with their problems. I now work predominantly in private practice.
My experience includes: concerns about gender identity, problems with family, problems with relationships, sudden bereavement, long-term illnesses, encountering discrimination in the workplace, suicidal ideation, problems with parents, problems with ex-partners, problems with children, problems with adjusting to English/British culture, loneliness, depression and anxiety.
Practice description
I help people accept who they really are in an unaccepting world and try to help them find their own personal liberation. “If you’re the sort of person who gets stuck at the odd table at a wedding, then I’m the right person for you!”
The form of counselling I practice is called person-centred counselling (PCC), also known as client-centred (CCT). PCC/CCT belongs to a family of therapies called “humanistic” and people who use this believe that the power to change is within every individual and just needs the right environment to come out.
I provide a non-judgemental space where I treat the client as the expert and authority on themselves. I create a “safe space to be unsafe” where you can authentically be yourself and talk through the things that really get to you. This gives you the opportunity to unpack things with someone who wants to listen to you and understand your point of view.
My first session
On our first session I will contract with you by which I mean I'll explain who I am, the method I follow, my association with the BACP, and the bounds of confidentiality. This process takes about 5 minutes and then I'm happy to answer questions on it. :)
