Availability
I am able to meet with you face to face or online during the week. I have most availability on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursday mornings. As well as daytimes, I can offer some early morning or evening appointments to suit, though these may need to be online. I mostly meet clients weekly for 60 minutes, generally the same day most weeks, though there is flexibility to meet your needs.
I currently see clients at the Cornish Therapy Centre, Redruth (www.cornishtherapycentre.com), and online. I am also happy to offer outdoor/walking sessions as I value the therapeutic benefits of nature, and recognise that sitting and talking isn’t comfortable for everyone.
About me and my therapy practice
I’m a warm and compassionate psychotherapist with a down to earth and reflective style. I use a variety of approaches, tailored to suit each client. You are welcome just as you are.
I have found that it is often easier to journey the ups and downs of life with others, and to have support to make sense of things. I believe in the good it can do simply to be heard and acknowledged. It can be useful to have space to explore the complexities that come up from difficult experiences and in the different seasons of life. I offer a relaxed, open-minded space for clients who wish to examine their challenges and inner world at their own pace. I believe this facilitates healing, growth, and self-discovery. As we understand ourselves better it can lead towards freedom and flourishing in life.
The strength and fragility found in humanity astounds and inspires me. I am struck by our capacity both to harm and heal, to hurt yet hope. I believe we have a propensity towards growth and a potential for connection. There is mystery here, but relationships seem to be key. How we have been treated and how we treat others really matters. Relationships, so often at the root of issues, can also be restorative and the conduit for change.
I have experience working with complex issues such as trauma and abuse as well as general wellbeing and relational difficulties. I have a BSc Degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling and an MSc in psychology. I became a therapist after spending a decade supporting vulnerable families through various struggles including substance misuse, domestic abuse, and relationship difficulties.
I also work for a charity called CLEAR supporting clients who have experienced sexual abuse, and my professional interests include psychology, neuroscience, attachment and trauma. I have a growing interest in the body-mind connection and healing through the body. I live in Cornwall and enjoy reading, puzzles and long walks with my dog.
Practice description
Relational approaches are the foundation of my practice, which means that I look to build positive relationships with clients where they feel valued, understood and where we can talk honestly and openly. I adopt an attachment and trauma-informed approach and have training in other techniques which means I can integrate a range of therapeutic methods as required.
I work collaboratively with clients to find the right fit for them and their situation. What we discuss confidentially can vary but is likely to include exploration around current or past relationships, childhood or traumatic experiences, emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and situations that are found to be difficult.
I adhere to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy ethical framework, which means I put clients’ wellbeing first, working professionally and respectfully and in agreement with the values and commitments to human rights and dignity. You can read more about these at bacp.org.
My first session
I offer short 45 minute initial session (face to face or via video) where you would share some of your reasons for coming to counselling, and I would share ideas of how we might work together. This gives us both chance to decide if we feel that we are a good fit.
If I don't feel that my skill set is going to be the best for you then I'll let you know. Equally, it is no problem if you feel the timing isn’t right or I’m not the counsellor for you – I know it can take a few trials to find the right one.
