About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Matthew, a fully qualified and experienced therapeutic counsellor. Therapy creates a unique space in our life. It can be the place where we’re able to speak most openly and honestly, without judgement. We can make sense of our complex lives and ask questions we might not think to ask in the busyness of everyday life. And it’s a space where important changes can begin to occur.
Therapy is often about change. We may want to challenge our habits and patterns, re-shape our relationships or even alter the trajectory of our life completely. Sometimes the change we seek is simply an internal one, changing how we feel about ourself and our past, how we experience day-to-day situations, how we envisage our future.
Working together
I’ve worked for many years with individuals struggling with issues including addiction, negative patterns of thinking and complex trauma. I have experience working with depression, anxiety, stress, loss, low self-esteem and difficult relationships. Sometimes people have come just feeling lost, or not exactly sure what the problem is.
I have a MSc in Therapeutic Counselling and work integratively, which means a range of therapeutic ideas and tools are available to us to address any issue. I’m also a mindfulness and meditation practitioner, which is something we can include if it interests you.
We’re all different, so in therapy with me I’ll begin by getting to know you more deeply, understanding the things you’d like to focus on, then we’ll agree upon ways we can work together. It’s a collaborative process from the start and we’ll frequently review what we’re doing and how you feel about it.
While therapy is different for everyone, there are some fundamental features you can expect. I’ll listen with empathy and care to anything you wish to share. We’ll deeply explore whatever’s happening in your life and in your most important relationships. And what you truly want and need can find expression.
My first session
It’s absolutely crucial to therapy that you feel you can trust your therapist and that you can develop a good working relationship together. The best way to get a sense of this is by having a consultation session. I offer free consultations by video call or telephone, usually lasting around 20 minutes.
