About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified, experienced, trauma-informed counsellor offering therapy sessions to adult individuals face-to-face in Chiswick (London W4), Ealing (W5) and remote sessions online.

We all go through difficult periods in our lives. Sometimes this is due to easily identifiable issues - bereavement, loss, heartbreak, employment stress, family or relationship difficulties, past or present trauma.

But sometimes we go through periods where things don't feel right and we don't know why. Perhaps you wake up with a feeling of dread. Perhaps you feel empty, going through the motions of a life that no longer feels like the one you wanted. Talking to friends or family can feel too much, either from a sense of shame or a fear of being a burden. It's easy to become trapped in lonely isolation and feel helpless to effect change.

Making the decision to talk to a therapist can feel daunting, especially if it's your first time. Both as a therapist and as a client, I know the relief, the lightening of the load that can come from talking to a trusted, skilled professional; someone who has no other agenda in your life, who can help you explore difficult feelings without judgement, formulate and articulate your thoughts, reframe your view and approach to parts of your life, and begin to work towards change and a more fulfilling experience of the world.

Working in west London and in higher education, I am used to counselling people from a broad cross-section of demographics, nationalities and walks of life. I work in an inclusive way while always remaining mindful of difference and how that may impact our relationship and our work.

Whether you are suffering from anxiety, stress, depression, low mood, low self-esteem or are dealing with trauma or the legacy of it, there is no need to suffer in silence.

Practice description

I work in an integrative, person-centred way. This means that I assess and treat each client as an individual, shaped by their own unique set of past experiences and present circumstances. I draw on a range of therapeutic theories and techniques to best suit the person sat facing me.

Whoever you are and whatever issues you are experiencing, I will meet you with warmth, compassion, empathy and understanding. You will be listened to and valued. I will facilitate a safe, confidential, non-judgmental space for you to bring whatever is troubling you.

Trust and the relationship are key to successful counselling. Working together, we can explore whatever is going on for you, and work towards a greater understanding of why you feel stuck and how to move forward from it.

I work 1-1 with adults, face-to-face in Chiswick (London W4) and Ealing (W5), and online via Zoom, in 50-minute sessions.

I offer short and long-term counselling dependent on client needs. For longer term work, I will ensure we undertake regular reviews so we can check our progress and area(s) of focus.

I don’t specialise in particular issues. But outside of my private practice, I work a lot in higher education, so I enjoy working with young adults. And my background is in the film industry, so I've also worked a lot with arts professionals and organisations, as I understand the particular pressures and challenges facing performers, artists and creatives.

I'm a BACP Registered counsellor with a Professional Diploma in Integrative Counselling from a BACP-accredited course (Mary Ward Centre). I work within the BACP Ethical Framework.

I undertake regular CPD. Most recently I completed an Advanced Certificate in Somatic Trauma Theory & Skills (via Temenos) to enable me to work in a trauma-informed way.

I have a current Enhanced DBS certificate, am fully insured, and undertake regular supervision.

My first session

Coming to counselling for the first time, and voicing things you may not have talked about with another person before, can be difficult. I never lose sight of that, and will gently support you with warmth and kindness as we start to explore what brings you to counselling.

I am happy to offer a free 20-minute phone or Zoom consultation at the outset, so we can both get a feel for each other and decide whether I am the right therapist for you.

If we decide to move forward, in our first full session, you can begin to tell me your story more fully, and I will start to build a picture of your life, including your history, your home life, your support network, your health, etc.

We will also agree how we are going to work together. I will run through the practicalities then share with you a brief contract, which you can take away and review if you wish before signing.

Unless you have a firm idea of what you are looking for, I normally recommend an initial stint of 6 sessions then a review to see how we are doing.

Please get in touch via the BACP directory or by emailing philcairnscounselling@gmail.com.
