About me and my therapy practice

Hello, and welcome.

I'm Ian Caley and I specialise in helping people overcome drink and drug use problems and addiction. Whether you are sober curious or emerging from a treatment centre, read on, I think you might be in the right place.

I provide a safe, empathetic and qualified space to talk through trauma from childhood, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety and anger. We may feel we're losing relationships, our work may be suffering or we may simply feel empty, like something's missing. We may be starting to experience 'black outs' or other not so nice consequences, and this can all feel dark and can become overwhelming.

I help people to work through these problems when they are entangled in excessive drink and drug use- a coping mechanism that we may have relied on over the years. You may be reading this feeling that drink (or the other substances you might use) are no longer working for you- they don't do what they used to.

What separates me from other therapists (my clients tell me this is important) is my own personal experience of addiction and subsequent recovery (drinking was my thing). As a result of my experiences I decided to study. I have a Masters in the Psychology of Addiction and Counselling so that I can help others, you maybe.

My work is evidence based yet personal, empathetic and non-judgemental, as you would expect. Excessive drinking can bring feelings of shame, and I feel strongly that I should provide a space for you to let that shame go.

I have connections with top treatment centres abroad and in the UK and can refer you if that's what we need- for detox and start of recovery for example, and I am a treatment continuation therapist for clients who are leaving treatment centres to come back home. But very importantly, I am also here to help those who are sober curious (in a very relaxed, non-judgemental way).

I see clients in-person in Hove or Lewes in East Sussex, and online for those out of area and abroad.

My hourly rate is £80.

Practice description

Face to face practices in Hove and Lewes, East Sussex where I am based,

Online to those out of area across the UK

Online to those abroad.

Qualification; Masters in Addiction Psychology & Counselling.

Some therapists say they can help with addiction or drink and drug problems but very few have actually experienced what it's like, very few have really been there. I understand what it's like to feel stuck. I live my life today held by a 'whole recovery' and I now help others to work towards the same thing and beat the anxiety, depression and anger.

I don't drink these days, but that doesn't mean I will push you towards the same outcome, not at all- this is a complex area and we need to have a safe place to talk it though.

Please get in touch, let's explore why you're on this page.

My first session

I'm a normal guy, easy to relate to and get along with, yet professional, calm & relaxed.

I'm an integrative therapist but of course that has a person-centred underpinning so I won't put you on a couch and diagnose you- I believe you to be the expert on yourself, but as an experienced drug & alcohol specialist I know that there are other modalities we'll need to lean on.

Whether it's addiction, drinking too much alcohol, sober curious, substance misuse, loss or bereavement, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger or an insidious mix of all of those feelings, I'll sit with you as you slowly and safely lift the lid on them and let the light in.

I personally think seeking help is a massively courageous step to take and I won't be taking that for granted. I'll provide safety for you -that's paramount- and a confidential space where you can talk to me in depth about the things you don't want others to know (work or loved ones for example). Sometimes we need to share what's going on but we don't have anyone to share to.

The methods I bring in to our sessions will be studied and evidence based and will depend on where you are in your journey and your change cycle, what you're feeling like today and what's important for you to work through in the here and now (are you beginning to explore change or are we far enough in that we're working on maintaining the change you've moulded).

You can expect understanding, empathy and methods that work. And you'll experience hope. Things will change.

What I can help with

Abuse, Addictions, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Cancer, Chronic fatigue syndrome / ME, Depression, Health related issues, LGBTQ+ counselling, Loss, Menopause, Mood disorder, Obsessions, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Spirituality, Stress, Substance Dependency, Trauma, Work related issues

Types of therapy

Behavioural, CBT, Cognitive, Humanistic, Integrative, Person centred

Clients I work with

Adults, Families, Groups, Older adults, Organisations, Trainees, Young people

How I deliver therapy
