About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Joel, a qualified and registered integrative therapist.
I help individuals with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, bereavement/loss, anger, stress, confidence/self-esteem issues, eating disorders and trauma/PTSD.
I have extensive experience working with addictions, men's issues, codependency* and relationship issues. I have in-depth knowledge and experience of 12-step recovery.
*Codependency is being overly focused on taking care of others at the expense of one's own happiness, often relying on the approval of others for sense of worth.
What would we do in therapy?
As an integrative therapist, I use various approaches to best suit your unique needs and preferences - this may involve developing mindfulness practices, exploring childhood relationships (psychodynamic), examining present-day thought and behavior patterns (cognitive-behavioral), along with creative methods like visualizations and art/drawing.
What would be the benefits of our therapy work?
As well as emotional support, you are likely to increase self-awareness, acquire tools for coping with life’s inevitable challenges, develop emotional resilience, and improve your relationships, enhancing your overall well-being and ability to grow and flourish.
How can coaching help in therapy?
As a certified professional coach, I also offer life coaching. For example, after completing the healing work of therapy, some clients value a few sessions of coaching to support them in working towards their future goals and ambitions. There are various other ways to integrate coaching and therapy which we can discuss during our initial chat.
Where I work
I offer in-person therapy in Clapham, London and Tonbridge, Kent.
I offer 'Walk & Talk' therapy in Kent. Individuals can feel more relaxed and free to express themselves in natural surroundings.
I offer online therapy.
What next?
Call me directly, or complete the Contact form to arrange an initial 20 minute chat. I look forward to meeting you soon!
Practice description
I believe healing and growth occur through relationship. In a secure therapeutic collaboration, individuals can deepen their connection with self and others and live a more fulfilling life.
Whatever challenges you are facing, I provide a comfortable, confidential space, which is safe and non-judgmental.
My practice is grounded in the humanistic, person-centered tradition that believes individuals have a natural tendency towards their own well-being and growth, and that my job as a therapist is to help you connect or reconnect with this powerful human drive.
I believe that empathy, realness and unconditional respect are the bedrock of effective therapy. As an integrative therapist, you can expect me to build on these foundations by drawing on a range of tools and modalities (e.g., psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, humanistic, creative) tailored specifically to your unique individual circumstances, experiences and needs at a particular point in time.
This could mean exploring your childhood relationships and how they are impacting on your life today (psychodynamic) or exploring how you are being influenced by patterns of thought and behaviour in the present day (cognitive behavioural). It could involve creative techniques such as visualizations, artwork and drawing, or even role play. A combination of approaches will be tailored specifically to suit your needs, preferences and personality.
My first session
I will ask you to complete a client information form before or at commencement of therapy with details such as mental health history, reasons and goals for therapy, etc.
We will discuss this in our first session to get really clear about your goals for therapy. We'll also discuss the therapy contract and expected boundaries that will help us to maintain an effective and professional therapeutic alliance.
Starting therapy can seem scary or even overwhelming, but the rewards can be great if you take that risk. I will help you feel safe and secure as you work at your pace to figure out what is best for you and what you would like to address.
I recommend an initial minimum of 6 sessions to allow our work to evolve. After that it is easier for you to make an informed decision about whether or not you wish to continue therapy. If you continue beyond the first six sessions the period over which we work becomes open ended until we end by agreement.
