About me and my therapy practice
I am a person-centred psychotherapist/counsellor.
I trained at Liverpool John Moores University, receiving a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice (with merit), after a 20-year career working in communication and leadership roles in mostly large organisations in London.
In 2014/15, I had a breakdown which prompted me to rethink my work, work-life balance and my plans for the future.
Working with a therapist at that time, I came to realise that I had been living with anxiety and depression for years and although pressure at work had been a factor in my breakdown, it was far from the only cause.
I am passionate about helping others to work out what is going on for them and hopefully to help them reach a better understanding and acceptance so that life becomes more fulfilling.
I have worked in the public, private and third sectors, as well as academia. Alongside my therapy practice, I teach at university, speak at events and write about mental health, work-life balance and resilience.
My breakdown and subsequent recovery led to my change of career to become a therapist, setting up amjcounselling.com in 2022. I named AMJ Counselling after my daughter – ‘AMJ’ are her initials. It is a reminder, if one were needed, of trying to focus on the things that matter in life.
I am married and have a daughter. I am Irish.
