About me and my therapy practice
I am fully insured and qualified with a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling, and a BSc in PsychoSocial Studies from UEA. I work with individuals and couples.
I have always had a passion for assisting others to make sense of their struggles, to heal, learn and develop their potential.
I combine an analytical and inquisitive mindset with a non-judgemental sensitivity that helps me to gauge where someone is at and I will actively explore with you to untangle and work through your difficulties.
I work in a person-centred way, which is all about helping you to feel comfortable and safe enough to connect with your inner workings and to share and explore together to make some sense of them. I’m a firm believer that you are the expert on yourself.
For working with couples my approach is also person-centred, facilitating you both to untangle what is happening in the relationship and work out how to move forwards.
I can also incorporate aspects of Focusing, a process that works with awareness of the body and connecting to the felt sense of emotions and experiences.
Client testimonials:
“I never felt judged or intimidated.. I think the fact that I found it so easy to open up to you shows that there was an instant trust, and the longer time went on I became more and more comfortable.”
"I physically felt a weight taken off my shoulders and like I had literally got things off my chest. I genuinely felt lighter and like I could breathe better. I have never had these feelings before, clearly my stress had affected the way my body was functioning and just by talking things through with Tom, I felt mentally and physically healthier."
"It was nice to meet you, and to know that I can engage with therapy if the setting/practitioner is the right match, as it has always been my concern based on prior experiences that it was something fundamentally with me which would prevent any level of engagement."
Practice description
Appointments are held in person in St George's Works, Duke Street, Norwich. NR3 1QA. It is on the 3rd floor, with stairs and an elevator.
We'll establish what your goals are from therapy, and work together until you feel you're at a point where you'd like to stop. It's open-ended and under your control. For longer-term work we will regularly review how the process is going for you, so that you're getting the support you need.
The approach is founded on the three principles of seeking to understand the world from your perspective, being non-judgemental, and staying honest and straight-forward with you throughout the process. The goal is to help you connect to and understand yourself better and build an ability to trust yourself. This helps develop your confidence to function in the world, whatever you are struggling with.
Alongside my counselling work, I am a Pastoral Coach at City College Norwich, leading the wellbeing support on a specialist course for Autistic students, often with multiple neurodivergent diagnoses (eg. ADHD, PDA). I am also a tutor on the Counselling Skills course at the Norwich Centre.
