About me and my therapy practice
I offer counselling to young people aged 16+ and to adults.
What brings you here and what you are looking for from therapy? We can explore that and I can help you to find better balance in your life, live authentically, make sense of your relationships, deal with stresses and/or overcome unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours. We can work with what you bring to sessions, perhaps linking it to the past to help make sense of it or identify patterns. I always work to attune to you and your needs.
I usually offer an initial block of between six and twelve sessions to be reviewed as necessary. I also offer longer term work and often work with clients longer term.
A session is approximately 50 minutes whether face to face or online. If it is online you need to be somewhere you feel comfortable and will not be overheard or interrupted so you can concentrate on the session and getting the most from it.
Sessions are confidential and I abide by the BACP code of ethics.
As well as training as a therapist I have had a long career working for Government in environmental protection and policy and I continue to do this as well as doing agency counselling work.
I have extensive knowledge and personal experience of a number of addiction ‘12 Step’ recovery programmers including Alcoholics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families and Al Anon. I also have a regular zen meditation practice and I get outdoors and get active regularly as I find it supports my own balance and wellbeing. I am also neurodiversity aware and experienced.
For those who are interested in the type or ‘modality’ of therapy I offer - I take an integrative humanistic approach. I also take an active interest in and am informed by psychodynamic ideas, attachment theory and somatic/body psychotherapy.
Practice description
Some info about what to expect from therapy…
Research tells us that the relationship between therapist and client is central to client outcomes. It’s two way. I offer a safe trusting environment to enable you to bring all of your thoughts and feelings into sessions. I also have self-regulation techniques to offer if things are feeling too much.
I recommend you try to keep the focus on your own feelings and experiences. Be curious about why you are the way you are. When you focus within, you’ll find a lot of resources. This can help you make any changes you want to make and be much more empowered to make them.
We’ve all adopted strategies for getting along in life. What are yours and what do they do for you? Some people, for instance, realize that they are over accommodating because that’s the only way they felt accepted by others when they were young and their opinions were not valued. Or they are attracted to people now who are emotionally unavailable or they learnt to comfort themselves with food because they had a parent who was preoccupied with work or alcohol or caring for someone else.
Therapy can help connect the dots between events and understand how your personality and your responses affect your well-being. A deeper understanding of how you operate (and why) in different circumstances will serve you as you apply what you’ve learned in therapy.
This can take the form of specific things you want or need to take on, change or accept. Or it might take the form of more general intentions about how you want to behave going forward, such as an intention to not avoid situations that make you anxious or only have relationships with people who can be there for you.
My first session
I am happy to provide a free initial 30 minute informal consultation.
This initial consultation can be over the phone, online or in person. We can discuss what you are looking for from counselling. You can get a feel for whether I am someone you would like to see for further sessions. If I don’t feel I am the best person to meet your needs (for example it seems that another form of therapy may be more appropriate) we can discuss that.
