Hello, I'm Kat. I offer individual and relationships therapy, both face to face and via video link. I work in an integrative way, tailoring my approach individually to each client or each couple. I have experienced emotional pain, despair, shame and anger, the whole range of human emotions, and understand how hopeless life can feel. I am passionate about helping my clients grow into their most self-loving, confident selves.
Whatever issues my clients present - whether it is depression, anxiety, low self esteem, anger, or lack of engagement with life, we start by building a relationship where you, as a client, feel safely held within the loving kindness of my practice. Only when you feel safe from judgement, anger or ridicule, you can practice being who you really want to be.
It can be a daunting prospect - this decision to enter therapy. And choosing the right therapist for you, somebody who will 'get' you can be difficult too. I am happy to offer 30 mins video session, free of charge, to help you decide if my ethos and personality are a good match for you and whether my skills set is best for the issues you bring.
About me and my therapy practice
I am a Person Centred Therapist, and a registered member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. My practice is underpinned by a Buddhist philosophy of letting go of harmful thoughts and beliefs and loving acceptance of ourselves and others.
Where helpful, I incorporate aspects of Mindfulness into my work, linking the Mind and the Body to help access and recognise feelings that might have been buried in the past but are still affecting the present, both as unhelpful mental patterns and physical complaints.
I support my clients in working with their Inner Child and in resolving issues relating to early trauma and associated shame.
I offer relevant psychoeducation to help you understand the psychological dynamics which shaped the way that you relate to yourself and others.
Practice description
In the hourly session I offer to enter your world as if it was my own,, sharing how you feel and giving you all the understanding, attention and compassion that I can give. By providing this compassionate and non-judgemental environment, I support you in gaining confidence to discover and dismantle any possible barriers to happiness and wellbeing.
My first session
Whatever the style of therapy offered, the most important aspect of it, I believe, is the relationship between the client and the therapist. The feeling of being accepted, listened to, understood is the first step towards successful outcomes. There are different reasons why people might not 'click', you might find the counsellor's accent, dress sense, way of expressing themselves subtly off putting, which might negatively affect the building of the therapeutic link between us.
It can take few tries to find the right person for you and the first session will give you a chance to form an initial feeling of whether I could be that right person.
During our first session I will tell you a little bit about myself - you might like to know about my professional background and the way that I work and how that might relate to the issues that you are bringing into therapy.
I will explain to you my policy on confidentiality and ask you for some basic information from you - your date of birth, ways of contacting you, who your doctor is and how they can be contacted if needed, your past counselling history, any issues that might affect your safety while in therapy.
Once those necessary preliminaries are out of the way, we can focus on what it is that is bringing you to counselling, what ails, what you would like to achieve.
At the end of this first session, if you decide to continue, we shall agree on the initial number of sessions - it can be 1 more, it can be indefinite at this point, on the frequency, and the days and times most convenient for both of us. We can also discuss my fee - I offer sliding scale for counselling students and clients who are on benefits.
