About me and my therapy practice

There’s a reason you feel this way— and a path forward.

If you’re feeling numb, anxious, depressed and struggling to cope with old wounds from childhood still affecting you today - you’re not alone. You are not broken and there is nothing “wrong” with you. Something has happened to you, and the way you respond to this pain makes sense. In therapy together we’ll begin the gentle process of understanding what you’ve been carrying, how it’s shaped your relationship with yourself and others, and the ways you learnt to survive.

About me & my practice

My name is Ricquel (pronounced Rick-Elle) and I’m an integrative-relational psychotherapist offering short-term counselling to support clients suffering from specific issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as long-term psychotherapy for those on a journey towards self-exploration and personal growth.

I’m an experienced former Rape Crisis counsellor, and also offer specialist counselling for female survivors of sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse.

My integrative-relational approach to counselling integrates being person-centred with psychodynamic theory, which means I will be led by you about what to focus on in therapy, yet will also seek to explore how your current difficulties may have been influenced by your past. Every person is different, so my therapeutic style incorporates different counselling approaches and techniques in our work together, such as mindfulness for example, if it feels as though this might be beneficial for you.

I believe that people are diverse individuals whose lives and issues are influenced by varied experiences and intersections, based on; culture, ethnic identity, gender identity, sexuality, disability, spirituality etc. My therapeutic approach values difference and acknowledges that each client has their own unique needs and experiences of the world, and I welcome you to bring your whole self into therapy.

Practice description

How I work with my clients:

I’m a compassionate therapist and have a natural ability to:

Help people identify what they are feeling

• Listen to and reflect people’s underlying feelings

• Educate people about the impacts of trauma in a relatable way

• Help people make sense of what happened in their past, and how it impacts them now

• Be a witness to people’s emotional pain and help guide them through it

• Acknowledge a person’s strengths and validate their ways of surviving

The most important thing to me in therapy is creating a safe, non-judgemental space for you to feel seen and heard, where you can talk through your issues and explore what might be causing them. I do not give advice or tell you what to do, my aim is to build a trusting, respectful therapeutic relationship with you, where you feel supported to find your own solutions on how to heal, move forward and create meaningful change in your life.

My role is to stay alongside you in your process offering warmth and empathy, enabling you to connect with your emotions, deepen your self-awareness and identify any emotional wounds that are impacting your current life and relationships. In doing so I hope to assist you in reconnecting with your wants and needs, so you can feel content, confident and live as your authentic self.

The journey towards healing and recovery can be dark and lonely, but I intend to be with you in the dark to help you find the light.

My first session

I offer a free, initial 20-minute call to give you an opportunity to ask any questions you might have and to give you a feel of whether we can work well together. You can message, email or call me to arrange this call at a time that's convenient for you.

It’s very important you choose a therapist that feels right for you, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Following on from this initial call you can book your first assessment session with me which will be our starting point for understanding your current issues, and your goals and expectations for therapy.

Once we’ve agreed to work together our sessions will last 50 minutes and will take place on the same day, at the same time each week or fortnight.
