About me and my therapy practice
Deciding to have therapy can bring up a whirlwind of emotions and the thought of opening up to a virtual stranger can feel daunting or overwhelming, so first things first, I’d like to acknowledge and commend you for taking a huge first step in your journey towards change.
My name is Ricquel (pronounced Rick-Elle) and I’m an integrative-relational psychotherapist offering short-term counselling to support clients suffering from specific issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as long-term psychotherapy for those on a journey towards self-exploration and personal growth. I also offer specialist counselling for female survivors of sexual violence, which includes rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse.
The most important thing to me in therapy is creating a safe, non-judgemental space for you to feel seen and heard, where you can talk through your issues and explore what might be causing them. I do not give advice or tell you what to do, my aim is to build a trusting, respectful therapeutic relationship with you, where you feel supported to find your own solutions on how to heal, move forward and create meaningful change in your life.
My role is to stay alongside you in your process offering warmth and empathy, enabling you to connect with your emotions, deepen your self-awareness and identify any emotional wounds that are impacting your current life and relationships. In doing so I hope to assist you in reconnecting with your wants and needs, so you can feel content, confident and live as your authentic self. The road to healing and recovery can be dark, challenging, and lonely, and I endeavour to be with you in the dark and help you find the light.
Practice description
My integrative-relational approach to counselling integrates being person-centred with psychodynamic theory, which means I will be led by you about what to focus on in therapy, yet will also seek to explore how your current difficulties may have been influenced by your past. Every person is different, so my therapeutic style incorporates different counselling approaches and techniques in our work together, such as mindfulness for example, if it feels as though this might be beneficial for you.
I believe that people are diverse individuals whose lives and issues are influenced by varied experiences and intersections, based on; culture, ethnic identity, gender identity, sexuality, disability, spirituality etc. My therapeutic approach values difference and acknowledges that each client has their own unique needs and experiences of the world, and I welcome you to bring your whole self into therapy.
I am flexible to offer therapy in a way that best suits you, and offer sessions; face-to-face, online via zoom, or via telephone. Once we’ve agreed to work together our sessions will last 50 minutes and will take place on the same day, at the same time each week.
My first session
I offer a free, initial 20-minute call to give you an opportunity to ask any questions you might have, and to give you a feel of whether we can work well together. It’s very important you choose a therapist that feels right for you.
Following on from this initial call you can book your first assessment session with me which will be our starting point for understanding your current issues, and your goals and expectations for therapy.
