About me and my therapy practice
Having needed help myself at various times throughout my life, I now feel deeply privileged to be able to call myself a helping person. I have been a supportive professional in a number of roles and settings, and have witnessed incredible change and growth in my clients. I am delighted to be able to offer support to you today. I am not just a counsellor, I'm a human being with real life experience who has worked tirelessly to be able to use that to help others and the world. I like heavy metal, fried chicken, and books.
How I can help.
Self-worth lies at the heart of all our lives. Our feelings, thoughts and behaviours all stem from how we feel about ourselves and our world. By taking the time to invest in yourself with a skilled professional, counselling offers the opportunity to discover and develop your worth which can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
Many of us carry deep wounds from our childhoods and early lives, often without being completely conscious of it. Still raw, or thickly scarred, these traumas can manifest in our adult lives, through sensitivity to hurt, inflexibility or unhelpful, self-defeating behaviours. In time these unhealed wounds can wreak havoc in our lives and relationships. When this day comes we are left with two choices, either carry on as best we can, condemned to repeat the hurts of the past or learn to give ourselves the care and love we have always deserved. Counselling offers an opportunity to begin a new life of healing and growth.
Practice description
Awareness. Acceptance. Authenticity.
As a person-centred counsellor I have witnessed time and time again that when people feel safe enough to be honest with themselves, and another human being, they are able to begin a transformative process of self-acceptance and self-realisation.
Each person who comes for help is unique. Everyone is walking their own path through life. I tailor my approach to your unique needs, based on a thorough negotiation with you which takes place at all times throughout our working relationship. With that said, work with me usually focusses on three areas.
Awareness: We will work together to develop a clear shared understanding of how you work and your difficulties. This may take the form of acknowledging the impact of traumas, or recognising barriers to healing and growth. Once we become aware of what is going on for you on an intuitive level which feels right to you we can begin to consider what you might need to resolve your difficulties.
Acceptance: Many of us may fight against the realities of life, or may experience disharmony in our thoughts and feelings. My therapeutic approach seeks to develop the way you relate to yourself, which can lead to a greater sense of inner peace and wellbeing. Acceptance is not the same thing as resignation or endorsement. It involves a full acknowledgement of our present circumstances.
"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself exactly as I am, I am able to change" - Carl Rogers
Authenticity: Modern life is demanding. And we can often feel alienated from others, or ourselves. For whatever reason we may feel unable to be fully ourselves. I offer a safe and non-judgemental space where my only investment in the process is to help you reach an experience of self which is comfortable and satisfying to you. I consider myself unshockable and welcome you to try!
My first session
I utilise a contextual approach to counselling, and believe the most effective approach is the one which best fits you as an individual. At your first session I will try to get to know you and understand your situation as fully as possible,we can then discuss what we can do to move forward together and agree a plan for our work. I will negotiate with you regularly throughout our work to ensure your needs are being met and the therapy is effective.
