About me and my therapy practice

I look forward to welcoming you to my therapy room, a fully accessible space in the centre of Beverley, where I will support you to explore how past or current events are influencing you, your life, and your relationships.

Relationships

Relationships may not be going the way you want them to, leaving you feeling confused, angry, or disappointed, wondering what just happened, which way to turn, and what it is you actually want.

Together we will explore who you are, the relationship you have with yourself and with others, and the underlying (often unrecognised) beliefs you hold about yourself which may be preventing you from having the relationships you desire.

Trauma

Although therapy cannot change what has happened to you, it can transform your relationship with what has happened, helping you to live a life which feels happier, freer, and more authentic.

I have a deep understanding of how early neglect, trauma, and broken attachments in someone’s life can impact who they are, how they feel about themselves, and how they relate to others. I support people to process their trauma in a way which prevents them from feeling overwhelmed, or from having to disconnect from their feelings to protect themselves.

Anxiety

Rather than trying to suppress any intrusive thoughts, feelings and sensations you are experiencing, we will embark on a voyage of self-discovery, exploring the root causes of your anxiety, and finding ways to slow down and soothe your threat response, generating an enhanced sense of calm, comfort and resilience, empowering you to choose how to respond to potential ‘threats’ in ways which reflect your inner values, rather than being hijacked by panic and reactivity.

Grief

I see many clients who feel overwhelmed or ‘stuck’ in their grief, unable to imagine a future without their loved one, and gently support them to move from the comfort of a loving presence to the warmth of a loving absence, enabling them to live alongside their grief and find new meaning in their lives.

Practice description

What kind of therapist are you?

I am an integrative therapist which means that:

(i) I will combine different approaches to meet your needs. I trained in Person Centred Therapy, and have also undertaken professional development in Relational Integrative Psychotherapy, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Bereavement Support, and Towards a Dialectical Self Trauma Therapy (with Dr Gordon Barclay).

(ii) I will support a client to develop their self-awareness, enabling them to integrate the parts of themselves that they have been forced to ignore, suppress, disown, or reject as they strived to belong and feel accepted.

What will happen when I first contact you?

When you first make contact, I will offer you an initial 15 minute no-obligation consultation, which will give us the opportunity to discover whether we feel that I am the right therapist for you. There will be no pressure for you to decide there and then if you would like to book any sessions with me.

What am I allowed to talk about?

I will provide you with the space to talk about anything that is on your mind.

Do I have to commit to a minimum number of sessions?

No you do not have to commit to a minimum number of sessions. Work can be shorter term to address a specific issue, or longer term if we are working at greater relational depth.

We will review our work together on an ongoing basis, and ultimately the decision will lie with you as to how long you wish to continue attending therapy.

How often will I have sessions?

Sessions are offered at the same time every week or every two weeks, or at different times to accommodate shift work.

As our work together is drawing to a conclusion, some clients opt to attend on more of an ad hoc basis for 'grounding' sessions.

How long will each sessions last?

Each session lasts for 60 minutes.

Is free parking provided?

Yes, free parking is provided for the duration of your session.

Is there a toilet for clients to use?

Yes, there is an accessible toilet next to the therapy room.

My first session

In our first session together, I will endeavour to make you as comfortable as possible, in what can feel like a daunting situation.

If we are working face to face, we will settle in together and I will offer to make you a drink. If we are meeting online, I will check to ensure that you are in a comfortable and safe environment.

An essential task during the initial session is to discuss the therapeutic contract, a mutual agreement which will form the basis of our work together. This will explain the professional boundaries, how I work, and what you can expect from me. We will also explore together how to incorporate your expressed wishes and needs.

I will then invite you to tell me your story in your own words and your own time, in a way which feels right for you. I will be curious about what is bringing you to therapy at this specific moment in your life. Sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint our motivation for attending therapy and ‘seeing what unfolds’ is also a very valid way of working.
