About me and my therapy practice
I am qualified with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and I work with a counselling charity for people who have experienced sexual trauma. I have worked as a qualified social worker for 36 years and have a lot of experience with trauma survivors of both domestic abuse and sexual trauma. I have many years of experience in social work working with people who have diagnosed mental health problems and since becoming a counsellor I have provided counselling to people with a diagnosis of a range of serious mental health problems.
What I am trying to say is that no matter what your difficulty is, I am happy to meet with you and work out how we can work together to make things better. If you want help to improve making choices or decisions, or if you want to reflect deeply on things that you have experienced, I will work with you.The mode of therapy I use is Person Centred with the added protocol of the Three Phase Trauma Model. If you have been diagnosed with or are curious about complex trauma, the Three Phase Trauma Model will help you find safety and understand your symptoms and triggers. You can then move on to making sense of the things that have happened to you.
I am a practitioner of the Flash Technique or Flash EMDR. This technique can unlock trauma memories and allow them to be processed. This can give quick relief from night terrors, panic attacks and flashbacks.
The Person Centred mode of counselling emphasises collaboration and working together as equals on the goals you choose.
If you need help overcoming a life event or improving choices and decision making, Person Centered Counselling can help in a time limited way or in an open ended way.
Together these modes can help people with complex trauma.
Practice description
I am trained and supervised in the Three Phase Trauma Model by a counselling charity who work with those who've experienced sexual trauma. I am also trained in Person Centred Counselling and I have private supervision every 2 weeks to make sure my as beneficial to you as possible. As a BACP member I subscribe to the BACP Ethical Framework available to view on the BACP website.
Depending on your needs we may agree some goals for the counselling and agree a frequency to review those goals. If we work in this way, my role is to keep the counselling on track to make the time spent as efficient as possible to achieve your goals.
If you are working on trauma and need to manage trauma symptoms, we may work in a quite structured way to learn "bottom up -top down" anxiety management techniques and the science which supports these techniques. Once these techniques begin to work, usually about 5-6 weeks, we can look at identifying and improving your tolerance to triggers. Once this is achieved, and if you want to continue, we can look at your history and attachments and consider more deeply where you trauma may reach back in your history. Most of the people I have seen improve their daily experience of better managed symptoms in about 20 weeks of regular sessions. The Flash Technique is used in these sessions and can speed progress.
When the counselling is reviewed, it is a chance to steer the way we work to become more goal oriented or to broaden the scope of the counselling in whatever way you wish provided we can be sure it would be safe and therapeutic.

Trauma and abuse can be isolating for those who experience it. Unmanageable feelings such as shame and helplessness can leave people feeling that no-one can help and no-one will understand. Please be assured, no matter what has happened, you will find acceptance here.
