About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I would like to introduce myself; my name is Claire, and I am an Integrative Psychotherapist.

Making the decision to see a therapist can be daunting. You may recognize that you don’t feel right or need some help but find it hard to express or describe exactly how you feel. Our emotions can be difficult to understand, but they usually tell us that something is out of balance or needs to change. It may be reassuring to know that emotions are universal, meaning that we all have them, and we all struggle with them from time to time. Sometimes we become stuck with certain emotions or feelings or feel overwhelmed by them, leaving us feeling out of balance or unhappy; it may be a specific event, or a build-up of a multitude of stress factors. Recognizing that you want help is the first step towards feeling better.

I regard my role as a therapist as providing you with a warm and safe space to explore your difficulties while helping you to regain internal balance. During our work together we would explore what is troubling you and ways we can work on changing that. Considering different psychological and therapeutic modalities, I select the approach that is the best fit for each client, and tailor a plan that meets the needs and goals of that person. If this is your first time exploring the option of therapy, it may be reassuring to know that therapy isn’t something that is “done to you”. It is a collaborative approach to finding solutions together, and there is no shame in seeking psychological support; you may just need a bit of help processing the way you feel.

I have extensive therapeutic experience working within uniformed services, with children and young people, trauma, self-harm, suicidality, low mood, addictions, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, anger management, grief and loss, and other emotional difficulties.

If you would like an informal chat prior to committing to therapy, please feel free to contact me, for further information or to book a session.

Practice description

My work is integrative, which means I am trained to use a variety of different psychological approaches. Some approaches are particularly helpful and effective at treating certain psychological difficulties.  For example, some approaches focus more on our thoughts and thinking styles and how we can change these to help us feel better, while other approaches involve working on the mind and body, helping you to recognize the connection between the two and how one impacts the other. This is something we would explore during our first session together, once you have shared what it is you would like help with.

I will formulate a plan for your therapy, with an outline of what types of therapeutic approaches might be helpful for you in understanding and coping with your difficulties. Therapy is a collaborative process, where we explore and review what is working well for you in therapy, and what isn't, and adjust this accordingly.  We are in it together, from the beginning to the end. Therapy is also a flexible and fluid process that can be changed and adapted to meet your needs and expectations. This includes the frequency or duration of therapy to ensure that you are comfortable with the direction of your therapy at all times.

Of course, you can end therapy at any time that it feels best for you to do so.

My first session

Our first session together will be a structured assessment of your needs, expectations and goals for therapy.  The purpose of the assessment will be to help me understand the current issue(s) you are struggling with, along with identifying historical factors which may impact it, triggers which may maintain it, and protective factors which positively support your emotional health.

From here I will create a formulation; this is like a summary or hypothesis which explains why you might be having difficulties and what might be maintaining those difficulties. It will help you to understand the connection between your experiences (past and present), your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and will outline the most suitable and appropriate therapeutic approaches for you, along with session plans and reviews, so that you are actively involved in the overall therapeutic process.

My price per session is £45, but this is reduced to £40 per session if booked in blocks of 6, and paid for in full.

Concessions can be negotiated if you are a student. Please do get in touch for further information about this.
