Counselling does not have to be weekly although it may be helpful in the beginning of your therapy.
I offer sessions either in-person or video call and telephone. I also offer walk and talk sessions. Some clients benefit from a mix and match approach and I will always offer this option to clients. You may feel that sometimes a walk and talk session will help after a few meetings on line or in-person.
Therapy can be a single session, short or long term depending on your needs.
I occasionally provide home-visits subject to our first session being face-to-face in my rooms or via video. This can be helpful for those unable to leave home for either health or caring reasons.
About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I am Kim, and I work in the centre of Poole Dorset.
When we hit a bump in our life talking helps. When we are able to talk freely we often find our own way through these challenges.
As a Humanistic counsellor I provide an empathic warm, safe and confidential space in which you can explore your concerns without judgement. I believe that by providing these conditions you will find you have the inner resources to guide you.
I work with the day-to-day challenges we often face in an every increasingly busy world such as stress, anxiety, life transitions and loss. My experience with loss includes significant, sudden or traumatic loss such as the death of a loved one.
It also encompasses other types of loss i.e., life limiting health conditions such as dementia and terminal illness. This includes the impact on those who are carers. I also work Pregnancy and baby or infant loss.
I do not provide advice however I will walk along side you in a collaborative way that endeavours to empower you to find your path and answers, at your own pace and in a way that is unique to you. Perspective is often gained when we work closely.
Humanistic counselling works with our mind, body and soul (or spirit). This often means working in the present moment, however you may want to gently explore parts of your life that you are not always fully aware of such as a unconscious repeating pattern of being.
I weave into my practice creative techniques and basic grounding and mindfulness if you think they could be helpful. I have an interest in existentialism .
The use of some solution-focused approaches can be helpful for those of us who are more doing focused. I also work with adult attachment issues.
For others a more emotional focused approach might be beneficial.
Counselling gives us the space to make sense of things especially at when it all seems to complicated or too much to even know where to start.
I work with young people over 16 years, students, including counselling student and all adults.
Practice description
Our first meeting is important and we will talk about what brings you to counselling and what your expectations are. This is important as it sets the scene for our time together. That scene isn't set and often different theme emerge over time. This is normal.
Whilst some people are goal focused, some of us aren't. This is ok. Sometimes it's a just a feeling that something isn't quite right in life and this starting point is as valid as any other. You might even have a long list of problems to explore.
How much counselling do you need? That depends on many factors.
A lot can be achieved in a single session especially if you are focused on one particular thing such as plucking up the courage to do something. Single sessions allow us to see how our idea's sound.
Brief therapy is generally up to 24 sessions but can be significantly less. This type of work can help us process loss, greater changes in our life (wanted and unwanted!).
Longer term and/or open ended therapy allows you to more fully explore the nature of who you are, how did you get there and how this nature of being affects you and your life. It provides a gentle unrushed space to unpack trauma, repeating patterns.
Counselling aims to help us become more compassionate, more authentic. It is often through looking at ourself and our life that we can grow. Growth isn't always about change and sometimes acceptance can be just as enlightening.
The weird thing is: it is often through acceptance that change can occur.
My first session
It's helpful to get to know each other a little before we start. That first step is the biggest one.
To help you decide if I am potentially a good fit for you, I offer an obligation free 20 minute "hello" call / video. I appreciate that I may not be the counsellor for you and that is perfectly ok.
If you think a full 50 minute initial conversation may be more beneficial. I charge £25.00, this is obligation free (concessions available).
Our first formal session will include an assessment and this can be really helpful in setting the scene for what happens next in your therapeutic journey. This is not set in stone and people sometimes find what brings them to counselling may be different to what they work through. This is quite normal.
Single Session Therapy is available and can help those who really just need to talk their issue through and find a solution.
