About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Sam Hughes and I offer psychodynamic counselling which looks at how the things we have done and learned in the past influence our current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Considering the way in which the unconscious and conscious interact, I help clients to understand why they act as they do and methods to make changes if they want to. I believe that we are all a product of our past but we don’t have to keep the behaviours, thoughts and feelings we have acquired – we can choose to change once we have identified them.
One of my clients described their counselling as tidying out a wardrobe where everything has been crammed in to a chaotic mess over a long period. You examine things and consider them. The things that make you happy you keep in an organised way and you discard the things that no longer make you feel good.
This type of counselling is not directive, I work with clients to help them find their own solutions. The approach is to bring lasting change rather than a quick fix.
Psychodynamic counselling is suitable for dealing with a range of issues and trauma. I offer a free 30- minute initial consultation to make sure that you feel that I am the right counsellor for you, subsequent sessions are for 1 hour. The duration of the therapy depends on what the client wants to achieve. Some clients have therapy for a few weeks (6-8 weeks) others have therapy for many months. More information on what I offer can be found on my website samhughes.co.uk
Practice description
I offer face to face appointments and am also happy to go for a walk, sit on a bench outside or to arrange sessions on line or by telephone - or a combination of all. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible in the surroundings.
Our conversations explore things that have happened in your life so far - both good and bad - to understand patterns and where behaviours could have developed from. The sessions are totally confidential and non judgemental and give you a safe place to share the things which bother you. We work together to address your issues to enable you to feel better.
We also work on relaxation techniques to make sure that you have a toolkit that is useable in times of stress. If you want to, I can also help you become more psychologically aware.
My total focus is on you, the client, and helping you feel better.

Recent research emphasises the connection between good mental health and gut health, if you want to, we can also explore how this works for you.
