About me and my therapy practice
Hi! I’m Roz and I am an experienced Pluralistic Counsellor with a Postgraduate Master’s Degree (MSc) in Counselling. I have also worked in the creative industries and love working with and nurturing creative minds. I provide online therapy based in the city of Edinburgh and rural South Lanarkshire.
My approach
Our sense of self is coloured by our early experiences and in many ways determines our adult choices, emotional reactions and internal dialogue. We absorb and adapt to the difficulties of our caregivers and circumstances, which are often filtered through previous generations of adversity. If this is your experience you may find yourself easily hijacked by strong emotions such as anger, fear, shame, anxiety or self-doubt; feeling easily rejected, judged or inadequate.
Perhaps you find yourself striving for an ideal that doesn't bring you wellbeing. Maybe the values, beliefs or expectations of your family or culture are at odds with your authentic identity, creating an inner conflict.
Perhaps you have learned to feed an external sense of self – your job, possessions, status - and have lost touch with who you really are. Perhaps you have learned to put others first to the detriment of yourself, or perhaps feel you have become too selfish.
Maybe you jump into romantic relationships too quickly and deeply – or have decided you are better off by yourself and yet part of you longs for connection. Perhaps living with underlying anxiety manifests as a physical response that affects your health.
Difficulties in living are not always about the past, and living with difficult family relationships, isolation, grief, loss, worry or prejudice can often leave you feeling anxious, stuck, depressed, shut down, disconnected or drained.
Practice description
Pluralistic counselling
Pluralistic counselling is based on evidence that many different psychotherapy approaches can be affective, and that no one therapy approach suits all people or circumstance. I study many different psychotherapy approaches, therapeutic principles and evidence-based ways of working. I will work collaboratively with you to reflect your needs and preferences.
In our sessions together we can create a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space to explore your experiences with compassion, acceptance and insight – to bring new perspectives and understandings that help you to reconnect with your authentic self, lifting the burden of resentment, unfairness or self-doubt, learning to trust your inner wisdom and sense of purpose, and to attune to your physical experience.
About me
I am an Accredited member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), and a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which are two of the leading professional association for the counselling and psychotherapy professions. I follow the BACP’s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
I am an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner, certified by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. Emotional Freedom Technique works in a similar way to EMDR. By skilfully pendulating between emotional memory and body tapping, it is proven to greatly reduce distressing thoughts and emotional responses to past events.
I have completed online-therapy training and I also have certification with The Online Therapy Institute.
I hold professional liability insurance and am a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Disclosure Scotland scheme.
Healthcare referrals
I am a recognised provider with VitalityHealth and can accept pre-authorised referrals.
I accept referrals from the Architects Benevolent Society
My first session
Introductory session details
Introductory video sessions are 30 minutes long, and I don’t charge for these. This is because I really understand how important finding the ‘right’ counsellor is.
This is an informal video chat where we can get to know each other a little and how we might work together, and for you to ask any questions you may have.
To book a free introductory session, please contact me by email, text or by visiting my booking page https://roz-henderson.selectandbook.com/ and select ‘Initial Appointment (New Client)’ from the dropdown menu.
Session details
Each video therapy sessions normally last for 60 minutes, though longer sessions can be booked by arrangement. I will usually create a series of weekly or fortnightly appointments so you have a reserved spot, but this does not tie you into therapy and you can cancel at any time, and extend or change the frequency going forward.
Online Therapy
I am currently only working online.
Online counselling is a little different to in-person counselling, but it is by no means second best. It is a way for you to engage in counselling at a time, the place that suits you. Whatever your reason for choosing online therapy, please be reassured that research into online therapy finds it just as effective as face-to-face therapy. Many people find the flexibility, convenience and comfort of being in their own space more relaxing, which can sometimes open up to a deeper experience. Being able to take your therapist with you when you move or travel away from home ensures the continuity of the therapeutic relationship.
You do not need to download any video software or apps, as the platform I use (WriteUpp) is a certified practice management software for therapists that works directly from your internet browser.
