About me and my therapy practice

In addition to pleasures and contentedness, life invariably brings us grief and uncertainty.

We come into the world primed and receptive to earliest experience. The first relationship was a source of satisfaction and also frustration. We spend a large part of our waking hours wondering about ourselves, and others, and negotiating the space between us.

Successive psychologies have explained primal conflicts, and paradoxes, and the games people play - with neuroscience latterly confirming what we each know, more or less intuitively. The experience of loving and being loveable (or otherwise) is likely the single most important variable determining wellbeing.

Coming into the world distinct and separate entities, living as best we can, dying separately; most of us spend about a third of our available time asleep. The subconscious resists exposure; dreams are mysterious and banal. If meanings remain elusive and events uncertain, we might nevertheless practice commitment to the here-and-now. We have decisions to make, relationships to consider, and difficulties to contend with. This is not a rehearsal.

Psychotherapy - once known as ‘The Talking Cure’; oddly the least of it is talk. Notwithstanding the need for words, life is our dreaming the unspoken.
