About me and my therapy practice
I offer two types of therapy; talking therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing).
Talking therapy
I work using a mainly psychodynamic approach to counselling. An approach to therapy which means that we will explore what lies beneath your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. We will think together about your current and past experiences, and how they may have shaped your beliefs and relationships today. My approach is warm and professional. I believe that talking helps and that therapy opens a door to new understanding and possibilities.
There is no right or wrong way to ‘do’ therapy. Talking therapy offers a confidential space to think and to feel, at a pace that is right for you. You might come with a specific problem in mind or perhaps you just sense that something is not quite right. Whatever your concern, we can think about the issue together.
EMDR
EMDR is a specialist form of psychotherapy, which is used to help process traumatic or distressing memories. During EMDR therapy, memory networks are activated whilst using rapid eye movements. The aim is to engage the brain’s information processing system to allow experiences to be processed and sorted through in a new way that makes sense.
Experiences, feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations will be explored and accurate ways of understanding this information will be discovered. This new understanding can assist in removing distress. It can also allow healthy brain processes to start sorting through and filing away past experiences.
Qualifications
I am a fully qualified and experienced psychodynamic counsellor and EMDR practitioner. I have completed a five-year BACP accredited training. I am an accredited member of the BACP and adhere to the BACP’s ethical framework. I am also a member of the EMDR Association UK. In addition to my private practice, I work for a charitable counselling service in Buckinghamshire.
My first session
Therapy starts with a conversation.
To begin, we will arrange a telephone consultation to discuss your current situation and to see if I can help. If you decide to take things further, we will then arrange an initial session. This will give us a chance to meet and decide if counselling feels right for you.
If we decide to work together, we will agree on a suitable time and day to meet each week. You might want to start and see how it goes, or you might prefer a certain number of sessions. Together we will shape the therapy by thinking about what is right for you.
Having a space to talk about your problems can really help. Thinking about your experiences, with a trained counsellor, can offer relief, insight, and new opportunities.
Please get in touch if you would like to know more about talking therapy, EMDR or both. Sessions are available in person, online and via the telephone.
