About me and my therapy practice

As a fully qualified counsellor, I specialise in walk and talk counselling and passionately believe in the positive benefits of being outdoors, for mental health. I am also able to offer face to face counselling sessions in a private therapy room near Pocklington and online or telephone sessions, as required.

I have been in the caring profession in one way or another throughout my working life, beginning with nursing and midwifery and I bring all this experience into my counselling. I also bring a passion for the outdoors and working as a professional gardener and designer for over 20 years, I really appreciate how therapeutic it can be to create and maintain a garden. Research shows that gardening or simply spending time outdoors can improve physical and mental health and is shown to reduce stress, improve mood and increase feelings of wellbeing. I can incorporate a creative element into our counselling work for you to bring in your ideas and needs regarding your garden space or simply to talk about your experiences of plants, wildlife, and gardening.

My qualifications include a masters degree in counselling from York St John university, which involved research on walk and talk counselling. I am an accredited member of the BACP abiding by their ethical framework and maintaining continued professional development.

I have had experience of working with a wide range of mental health difficulties including depression, anxiety, grief, loss, stress, loneliness, relationship difficulties and difficulty coping with significant life events, to name but a few. I also have a particular interest in difficulties associated with the menopause.

Alongside my private practice, I volunteer for a counselling charity in York.

Practice description

As a humanistic counsellor, I believe that you are unique, with your own individual experience of life and I will provide you with a safe, confidential and supportive space to talk about your difficulties and hopes. I will listen without judgement as I try to gain understanding of your life experience. I will be open and honest with you and support you to find your own best way forward as you are the expert in your life experience. Counselling is a process of gaining a better understanding of yourself that will enable you to make choices and feel more freedom to find ways to move forward.

My first session

I offer an initial, free 30 minute telephone session, for you to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it. You may wish to ask questions and I will provide as much information as I can about the way I work, the counselling and what future sessions might be like. If we both feel that we can work together then an appointment can be made for a further session.
