About me and my therapy practice
I’ll do everything I can to help you work through and move on from whatever has prompted you to seek help today.
I’m Harriet Summerfield, a BACP-registered integrative counsellor and psychotherapist with an MSc and a post-graduate diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling. I had two decades of experience in the voluntary and public sectors – including education, social care and the NHS – before practising in the NHS and becoming a qualified therapist.
I offer online and telephone therapy to clients all over the UK and have a specialist certificate in online and telephone counselling.
If you’re nearby, you can choose to have face-to-face sessions, in my counselling room in Staffordshire or as outdoor therapy. I love being outdoors and embrace the benefits of experiencing a natural environment, so outdoor therapy is an important part of my practice. Nature and beautiful green places provide an inspiring space to reflect and process thoughts and emotions.
I completed my Masters degree in counselling, achieving a Distinction, with a research focus on outdoor therapy.
Practice description
Therapy is very much a collaboration between me and you. I’ll provide you with a safe and confidential space to develop understanding and insight and to explore how you can work through your current situation. I’ll be with you every step of the way, providing non-judgmental support and expertise, whether through a short, focused series of sessions or longer-term support.
You can choose to see me online, over the telephone or for face-to-face sessions. Zoom secure encrypted video and telephone therapy can be undertaken with you feeling comfortable and safe either in your home, or, perhaps from a quiet uninterrupted office at work during a break, or even parked up in your car. You may feel able to be more open, less self-conscious, more anonymous working online with video or telephone.
Or you may prefer to see me face-to-face in my therapy room at The Ishta Centre, 26 Kings Avenue, Stone, Staffordshire ST15 8HD.
You can also choose to book my ‘Walk and Talk’ or ‘Sit and Talk’ outdoor therapy sessions. Walking relieves tension and stimulates blood flow to the brain, improving problem solving and creative thinking. Taking therapy outdoors has been shown to lower levels of anxiety, stress and depression and enhance a sense of wellbeing. Outdoor therapy is available to adults of all ages, no matter your physical capabilities.
I follow the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework, undertake regular supervision and am fully insured and DBS checked.
My first session
You need to be confident that I’m the right counsellor for you, so our first session will be a free 30-minute consultation over the telephone or via Zoom. It’s a chance for you to tell me what you’re hoping for from therapy and to ask any questions.

Sometimes we can all feel that life is a struggle. Occasionally we all need to take time out and take stock.
Work may be difficult at the moment and a source of stress or anxiety for you. Maybe you would like to change your relationships with others, forgive someone or just work out some more appropriate boundaries.
It might be the way you think about and look after yourself that has brought you here. Perhaps you find yourself falling into the same unhelpful patterns whether these are around relationships, working too much, or looking after yourself – but you can’t seem to be able to break the cycle? Maybe you have experienced a bereavement that you are struggling to come to terms with?
I have a Masters degree in counselling, with a research focus on outdoor therapy.
