About me and my therapy practice
Do you feel lost in life? Sometimes there is a feeling that creeps in. A sense of deep dissatisfaction with the way things are. It's ok to be stuck at times; stuckness is part of life. It can be difficult to know what to do. Self-awareness is a good starting point.
That’s where I can come in. My name is Ben. I am a therapist based in London and online. I work with people who might be experiencing adjustment stress, anger issues, anxiety, depression, identity issues, a lack of meaning and purpose in their life, life transitions, low self-esteem, men issues, phase of life problems, relationship problems, stress, trauma, work-life balance – among other challenges.
I aim to support the development of self-awareness. Self-awareness is about learning to better understand why you feel what you feel and why you behave in a particular way.
As a counsellor, I am often reminded that life is not without its stresses for everyone. Life is hard. Yet life should be less struggling and more living.
Talking offers the opportunity to make sense of things and to put things into perspective. It is also a way of rediscovering yourself. Ask yourself, what do you need to relearn? (A lot of learning is unlearning.)
The trouble with talking is that it can you help you feel better. But you don’t necessarily get better. Self-awareness in of itself is sometimes not enough. You have to back it up with action. That’s where my coaching training can come in (i.e., turning self-awareness into action).

Practice description
My starting point is always you. What do you want from life? Core to my approach is building a strong therapeutic relationship.
I am a BACP accredited counsellor. I practice using an integrative approach, including elements from Humanistic, Psychodynamics, CBT and Solution Focused Therapy.
Working in an integrative way means I combine different tools and techniques from different approaches. It gives me greater flexibility to adapt my approach to meet your preferences and needs.
Both 'being' and 'doing' are important in therapy. For example, people need different things at different points. Someone who has a clear expressed goal for therapy might benefit from a more proactive approach whereas someone who has an emerging awareness may want to use the space to explore their feelings and desires.
I acknowledge confronting reality can be difficult when it's painful. I try to create a safe space to help you think things through and discover your own answers. Pain is transformed when it is accepted.
In terms of the process, you set the pace. You are responsible for the content, and I am responsible for managing the process. The work is collaborative in nature. That said, you are going to have to do most of the hard psychological lifting! But I will be there to support you every step of the way.
My first session
I recognise many people may feel unsure, or may be worried, about engaging in therapy. The purpose of the initial assessment (first session) is to:
- Give you a feel for what counselling with me is like.
- Allow us to talk about your current situation and what kind of support you think you need right now.
- Lead to a discussion about goals for counselling and areas to be worked on in future sessions.
- Discuss my counselling contract. Contracting is important because you have right to know what to expect from counselling.
- Discuss mutual expectations and agree how we want to work together. This will ensure your preferences and needs are met.
- Provide a time to discuss the practicalities - looking at times, fees, cancellation policy, confidentiality etc.
- Enable you to ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have before making such a commitment.
Note: Attending an initial assessment does not mean that you are obliged to continue on to counselling sessions.
In all this, it is important to find a therapist right for you.
Thereafter, if all goes well in the first session, I ask clients commit to a further five sessions before reviewing the process. The contract can be renewed or not after that point.
What I can help with
Anger management, Anxiety, Bereavement, Depression, Identity issues, Life coaching, Loss, Men's issues, Personal development, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Stress, Trauma, Work related issues

About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Ben. I am a counsellor and coach. I start with the premise we can all make choices and change.
As a therapist, in effect, I am working to make myself redundant. So, if I know something, and I think it may be in service to the client I will share it.
In my work, I see clients with similar presentations and problems. That's why I started Ben Cooper Learning (accessed via: www.bencooperlearning.thinkific.com), a place where counselling theory meets education.
I've developed a range of online personal development courses. These courses try to address some of these common presenting issues and make the process of change more accessible to anyone.
Linked to this, I also work with organisations to deliver workshops and webinars. Themes include: boundary setting, burnout, expectation management, listening skills, people pleasing.
My work as a trainer is underpinned and supported by my experience of working as a Mental Health Recovery Tutor, at a Recovery College, in South London. I also hold a Level 3 Award in Education & Training (PTLLS).
If you are interested in finding out more about me as a trainer and what I can offer, please email me. Likewise, I am happy to discuss ideas you want to develop. Bespoke courses and workshops available.
