About me and my therapy practice

Hello, my name is Sophie Rose. I am a fully qualified Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

Counselling for children and young people might be slightly different to the traditional idea of therapy you may have in mind. Many children who are having a difficult time do not know what it is that they are feeling and cannot put it into words. Fortunately, a child counsellor does not expect children to sit down for 50 mins and talk abut their problems. Instead, a counselling room is filled with many resources, from arts and craft, to toys and a sand tray, which engage children and allow them to communicate effectively. It is through working creatively in this way that I provide children and young people with the opportunity to explore and express their feelings.

The use of the arts and play is integral to my Integrative approach which draws on several psychotherapeutic theories. Neuroscience and child development research underpin my practice which ensures the work encourages healthy emotional development.

Practice description

Along with providing a safe and accepting environment, I am patient, understanding and will work to build an effective therapeutic relationship. Through this trusting relationship I model reflection, containment and openness. This is turn supports the child in developing their own ability for reflection, emotional regulation and theory of mind. Together we will work to find the child’s meaning, wade through difficult feelings and build a kinder inner world.

Above all, the children and young people I work with should feel that I am listening, never judging and that I am trying to understand what life is like for them.

I believe that every child deserves the best chance possible in life so that they are able to achieve their potential. I love my job and have seen children and young people be able to make positive changes when given support.

My first session

Before beginning counselling with a child or young person, I will invite the parent/carer to meet with me first. During this session we will have a chat about what brings your child to counselling and the hopes of how you feel counselling may help. This session is really helpful for me to begin thinking about how I can best support your child or young person therapeutically.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor who specialises in working with children and young people.

I am also a Level 7 qualified Clinical Supervisor.

I have extensive experience leading and delivering counselling services in schools and of working with young people of all ages and levels of understanding; including those who have additional needs. My current work is in both schools and private practice.

I have years of experience supervising both trainees and qualified counsellors who work with children and young people therapeutically.

Practice description

Supervision is an essential part of our work as therapists. Working with children and young people in this setting can be demanding, challenging and at times distressing. Supervision is a safe, containing and reflective space for practitioners to think over their work and feel supported in their role. Similarly to our therapeutic practice, the relationship is at the heart of good quality supervision and so I bring empathy, acceptance and respect to the supervisory relationship, just as I do in my therapeutic work.

I am also able to offer supervision online, through platforms such as zoom.

My first session

In our first session we will talk about the needs you have for supervision and a little about your therapeutic approach and modality. We'll have the opportunity to get to know one another a little and for you to ask any questions about the possibility of working together.
