About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Sarah, and I believe that whilst life can be tough for all of us at one time or another, accessing support to cope with its ups and downs really shouldn't be. I am a qualified, registered and compassionate counsellor with over ten years experience in the support/therapy field. My experience in roles such as; Victim Support Caseworker,  Independent Sexual Violence Advisor, Specialist Domestic and Sexual Abuse Counsellor and Parent Counsellor, mean that I have worked alongside a great variety of clients, with a wide range of presenting issues and challenges. I provide professional and empathic counselling remotely via Teams or phone and face to face in Stoney Stanton, easily accessible from Hinckley, Leicester and wider Leicestershire.

I am a strong believer that our mental health should be acknowledged and treated on an equal level as our physical health, and making that time for you in therapy can be a crucial part in prioritising taking care of yourself.

Having worked in the charitable sector for considerable time with sexual and domestic abuse, I have developed a specialism in therapeutically supporting recovery from trauma. I am also pre-trial therapy trained, meaning that I can support you a way which feels safe and knowledgable, without affecting any criminal justice outcomes if you have made a disclosure as a victim of a crime.

For the past year, I have also been working as a Parent Counsellor for an Alternative Family Wellbeing Project in NW Leicestershire, which has equipped me with additional skills in supporting  difficulties associated with parenting, family and relationships and neurodiversity.

Practice description

I gained qualification in 2020 during the height of pandemic and so, have undertaken the necessary additional training to work online, as well as face to face, meaning I can operate around your schedule, according to the environment and modality that puts you at ease. I understand that for a lot of people, support needs to be flexibly fitted around the commitments of children, work and life in general and so I am able to offer therapy that suits you and accomadates what's most important to you.

Additional to my areas of specialism noted above, I have experience working with; Bipolar Disorder, depression, anxiety, OCD,  PTSD, work related stress, bereavement, illness (particularly fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue), child loss, identity crisis, menopause, divorce and separation.

My core modality is person-centred, which effectively means I am led by you, creating the appropriate conditions and environment to actively listen, process and reflect alongside you in an open and honest manner. Any work we do together will be delivered non-judgementally at your pace and with you in the driving seat of your therapy, in terms of what you choose to explore and when. I am also able to offer more creative elements of therapy such as Russian Doll work, shells and stones, worksheets and resources.

My purpose is to empower you to build greater understanding and resilience so that you can eventually improve wellbeing and thrive independently.

I am also able to offer reduced rates for counselling students, where required.

Please, reach out whenever you're ready to ask any questions you might have, and find out more about how I may be able to start helping you to move forward today.

My first session

I understand that taking that first step in reaching out for support can be daunting and filled with uncertainty and so I appreciate just searching for a counsellor can feel like a huge task. As such, I offer a free 20-30 minute initial phone call with you before committing to sessions, in which we can explore any queries you might have, and allow me to find out a little bit more about your needs and what you are looking for from counselling. This will hopefully allow you to make the most informed choice for you, about whether to proceed with therapy.

In the first session, whether that's held face to face or remote, we will go through some very brief paperwork including a counselling agreement, privacy and confidentiality statement and emergency contact details to introduce the safety, empathy and professionalism you need to start to feel comfortable with addressing whatever it is that has brought you to the therapeutic space. The rest of the time will be spent processing and reflecting, I may ask you some questions, but in a very open and engaging way, and only to allow me understand more from your perspective. Every aspect of the therapy will be approached in a manner which has your wellbeing front and centre.
