About me and my therapy practice

As a retired firefighter and now a counsellor, I believe that the most important aspect my clients value is understanding. Life throws us various challenges and sometimes, it's hard to find someone who truly comprehends what you're going through. This is especially true for those in the services. Having someone who has been in similar situations and who truly 'gets it' can be an incredibly rare and liberating experience.

Accessibility is another important factor for my clients. This isn't just about physical access to my practice, but also the simplicity of online sessions. All it takes is a link sent via email, and we're connected. I utilise a secure, GDPR-compliant online platform that is also used by medical practitioners.

My specialisation lies in Trauma Counselling. I provide my clients with a safe, structured approach to help them address issues such as PTSD. I use evidence-based practices like Trauma Focused-CBT, and other cognitive and somatic-based therapies such as Emotional Freedom Technique. The key point here is that our work together is led by your needs and preferences.

Practice description

At Why? Counselling, my practice is dedicated to fostering an environment of healing, growth, and thriving. As a Person-Centred Counsellor, I value understanding and empathising with individual experiences. Our sessions are about unpacking what's troubling you and sorting through it together.

The primary focus of my practice is trauma, specifically catering to the unique needs and experiences of both active and retired members of the Emergency Services and Armed Forces. In addition, I am deeply committed to supporting men as they navigate their own personal challenges. My practice offers a diverse and holistic approach.

I am trained in various therapeutic methods, including Trauma Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). I am committed to continuous learning and am currently working towards a Diploma in Trauma Therapy, having already attained a qualification in this field. The treatments I provide are tailored to individual needs and preferences, ensuring you receive effective and personalised care.

As a retired firefighter who has personally experienced disability and chronic pain, I bring a unique perspective of empathy and understanding to my practice. This, combined with my professional qualifications and dedication to helping others, makes my counselling practice a supportive space for those seeking healing and personal growth.

My first session

In our initial session, we will dedicate our time to understanding the circumstances and experiences that have brought you to counselling. This is a crucial first step in our journey together, as it provides a foundation for the work we will be doing. We will explore your feelings, thoughts, and fears, and you will have the opportunity to share your story at your own pace.

During this session, we will also begin to formulate a personalised treatment plan designed to meet your unique needs. This is a collaborative process, where your input is highly valued. Together, we will identify your therapeutic goals, discussing the approaches and strategies that are most likely to help you move forward.

Given the importance of this first meeting, it is scheduled to run slightly longer than usual, approximately 60 to 70 minutes. This extra time is allocated to ensure that you have ample opportunity to express your concerns and feelings, and that I have a thorough understanding of your treatment preferences and comfort levels. This extended timeframe is also intended to facilitate a safe and comfortable space for you, where you can begin to feel heard and understood.

Remember, this is your journey. I am here to support you every step of the way, ensuring that the strategies we employ are tailored to your circumstances. Our ultimate goal is to navigate through your challenges together, fostering growth, healing, and a deeper understanding of your own potential.
