About me and my therapy practice

As a counsellor specialising in trauma, I understand how difficult it is to function with the intrusive symptoms that come from being exposed to a traumatic event/s, such as the flashbacks, avoiding people or places that bring up uncomfortable feelings, or just feeling on edge all of the time. I would really like to reassure you that these feelings are totally normal.

Taking the first steps to see a counsellor, even if it’s not your first time, requires immense courage. That's why I believe in putting you at ease from our first point of contact and creating a safe, empathic and comfortable space where you can feel truly understood and supported.

My journey to becoming a trauma-focused counsellor is rooted in my 29-year career as a firefighter. This experience has given me a unique perspective on trauma and resilience, allowing me to connect deeply with clients who have faced challenging experiences. I combine my real-world understanding with professional expertise to offer specialised trauma therapy.

As a Person Centred Counsellor, I focus on your individual needs and experiences. I recognise that each person's journey through trauma is unique, and I tailor my approach accordingly. Whether you're struggling with PTSD, anxiety, or other trauma-related issues, I'm here to provide a supportive environment where you can explore your feelings and work towards healing.

Practice description

As a trauma counsellor, my approach is rooted in compassion, understanding, and evidence-based practices. In other words, it's all about you.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, scared, or unsure about taking this step, know that these feelings are normal and valid. My role is to meet you where you are, without judgment, and walk alongside you on your path to recovery. Together, we can work through your trauma, helping you rediscover your strength and resilience.

Here's how I work with clients:

Person-Centered Approach: I prioritise your unique experiences and needs, creating a safe space where you feel heard and validated.

Trauma-Informed Care: Recognizing the impact of trauma on the mind and body, I use techniques that address both psychological and physiological aspects of healing.

Evidence-Based Techniques: I employ methods such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Processing Therapy (TF-CPT) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to support your recovery process.

Flexible Session Formats: I offer face-to-face, online, and phone counselling to accommodate your comfort and circumstances.

Collaborative Goal Setting: We'll work together to establish clear, achievable goals for your healing journey, adjusting as needed along the way.

My background as a former Firefighter allows me to bring a unique perspective to our sessions, combining professional expertise with real-world understanding of trauma. This blend enables me to connect deeply with clients and offer practical, empathic support throughout the healing process.

My first session

In our initial session, we will dedicate our time to understanding the circumstances and experiences that have brought you to counselling. This is a crucial first step in our journey together, as it provides a foundation for the work we will be doing. We will explore your feelings, thoughts, and fears, and you will have the opportunity to share your story at your own pace.

During this session, we will also begin to formulate a personalised treatment plan designed to meet your unique needs. This is a collaborative process, where your input is highly valued. Together, we will identify your therapeutic goals, discussing the approaches and strategies that are most likely to help you move forward.

Given the importance of this first meeting, it is scheduled to run slightly longer than usual, approximately 60 to 70 minutes. This extra time is allocated to ensure that you have ample opportunity to express your concerns and feelings, and that I have a thorough understanding of your treatment preferences and comfort levels. This extended timeframe is also intended to facilitate a safe and comfortable space for you, where you can begin to feel heard and understood.

Remember, this is your journey. I am here to support you every step of the way, ensuring that the strategies we employ are tailored to your circumstances. Our ultimate goal is to navigate through your challenges together, fostering growth, healing, and a deeper understanding of your own potential.
