About me and my therapy practice

My name is Matthew Benjamin, and I am a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I have worked at many other placements in London, including St. Joseph’s Hospice, Turning Point, and Living Well,  as a counsellor, and  seeing clients with a wide range of emotional and mental health related issues for counselling sessions. These include anxiety, depression, addiction, grief and loss, relationship, work issues, stress, and low self esteem.

I worked in the music industry for over thirty years prior to committing to becoming a professional psychotherapist. It’s given me a wide and varied range of life experiences which I feel enhance my abilities to work in the field of counselling and psychotherapy, including:

● a good sensitivity to boundaries

● a capacity to listen attentively over long periods of time

● understanding the importance of patience and unconditional positive regard

● the ability to listen empathically, without passing judgement

● creating and maintaining positive working relationships

Practice description

I offer a safe, comfortable environment in which we will work together. Over the course of our sessions we will contract to explore what your goals and difficulties are, and what may be stopping you from reaching or overcoming them. We will explore how you feel, think and behave in regard to yourself, and others, and how making positive changes can benefit you. Your therapy will be specifically curated for you to reach a place of deeper understanding and facilitate your growth in a nurturing space.

The demands of my occupation in the music industry affected my well being in many areas of my life, and I sought out therapy over fifteen years ago. The work I have done and continued to do with my therapist has shaped me, guided me, and facilitated my journey in such a positive way. It has led me to study psychotherapy, and working with others in my practice, from all walks of life. I believe this journey to have given me a depth of understanding that facilitates me holding space, non-judgemental awareness, and unconditional positive regard for my clients.

My first session

The first four sessions are what I describe as exploratory sessions. During this period we will start to form the beginning of a strong working alliance, and I will get to learn more about my clients, their background, social and family history, where appropriate, and begin to explore the presenting issues, what they are, and what might be stopping you from moving through them. I also explain the confidentiality agreement, and the working arrangements .These early sessions are a form of rolling assessment, and during the fourth session we discuss, and mutually agree whether it is a good fit to continue working together. We will explore the nature of the work, whether it may be short-term or long-term, and agree what the focus of the sessions will be. This continues to be reviewed as the therapy progresses.
