About me and my therapy practice
About me
I am a child and family psychodynamic psychotherapist, with over 20 years’ experience working with parents and children. I undertake short and long-term psychotherapy, parenting guidance, communication work and assessments. I cover a range of emotional and psychological difficulties with expertise including:
General anxiety
Separation anxiety
Family Difficulties/issues
Parental separation
Sadness
Stress and worry
Low self-esteem
Bereavement and loss
Anger and behavioural difficulties
Sleep
Feeding
Attachment difficulties
Depression and low mood
Trauma
Abuse
Difficulties at school – including bullying
I have an in-depth understanding of social care and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). I further provide consultations to professional organisations such as schools, social services and GPs.
Throughout my career, I have gained a reputation for my ability to connect with people from all backgrounds. I have a distinctive warm and approachable style, together with a bright sense of fun which puts children and families at ease. I provide a calm and empathic space, am non directive and follow cues from children of all ages.
My first session
What happens in the first session?
For children: The initial appointment is with just the parent(s) or carer(s) of a child, giving the opportunity to discuss the difficulties in detail and decide what might be helpful. Sessions are then booked for the child if appropriate. I meet with parent(s) to review and support the work on a regular basis.
At times following the initial appointment, there are on-going sessions with parent(s)/carer(s) for us to continue to think together about the child's struggles or difficulties.
For young people: Where appropriate the initial appointment is with parent(s) or carer(s), (as above). On other occasions it is more appropriate for the initial appointment either to include the young person or to be with the young person on their own. From the initial appointment further sessions can be booked. A decision is made during the first appointment whether the parent/carer would meet from time to time to review the therapy.
For parent(s): An initial appointment can be made for us to discuss the difficulties you maybe experiencing - whether you are parenting alone, together or co-parenting. Getting support with parenting issues can help us be the parent we want to be rather than repeating how we were parented. We will look at what did and didn't work for you as a child and how what you bring from your experiences is affecting your current family.
