About me and my therapy practice

If you're thinking about therapy you've come to the right place. I'm a firm believer in the extraordinarily powerful impact of being heard. My priority as a counsellor is to provide you with a safe, comfortable and non-judgemental space where you can begin to process whatever life circumstance has led you to seek help.

Sometimes it is clear what you're struggling with and you may be clear what you want from therapy. Other times and for some people it's just the sense of knowing that something has to change; you can't go on living like you do and you need to get off the hamster wheel or the roller coaster.

I am ready to help you wherever you fall on the above spectrum. For this reason, I don't specify or limit the number of sessions at the outset. I work in a totally client-driven way and because I don't work full time hours this allows me to tailor my work to the smaller number of clients that I see at a given time.

I welcome any adult to get in touch and have an initial chat over the phone or via email if that works better. It's important to me that a prospective client gets a feel for who I am as a counsellor and is comfortable before even coming along to an initial session.

My starting point, after contracting and assessments, will always be to listen to you the client. I seek to understand you, your pain, your circumstances, whatever you are bringing into the therapy room. I will not rush on until you have that sense of relief that 'she gets it. This person really hears me. And they accept me'.

Practice description

My therapy room is a purposely remodelled space that sits adjacent to my home in a beautiful south-western corner of Ynys Mon (Anglesey). It has its own separate access and the parking space is right next to the room. I will always come out to greet you, especially on the first session so there's never a worry about whether you're in the right place!

Although in a fairly rural location, it is only a 12 minute drive from the A55 and many of my clients have fedback that they've enjoyed the drive to and from their sessions. The views are spectacular and often they have spoken of experiencing a greater ability to breathe, even seeing the big, big sky can bring a calm.

I work first and foremost within a person-centred approach. This means that you, the client determines what is brought into the therapy room. You are the 'expert' in the room so to speak. Everything else flows from this. Other modalities and specific types of therapy can be and will be used where appropriate.

If you want support to see solutions to problems I will help you to find them. If you want to process grief or trauma or make sense of relationship difficulties my role will be to metaphorically sit with you safely in that space and act like a companion or a guide on that journey.

You may notice that I like metaphors! I use them a lot in my work because I know that pictures really help me personally to understand situations and, therefore, I am pretty sure they will help you too.

I am a practising Christian so if you are a person for whom faith and spirituality is important and want to bring this into the therapy room then I also welcome this dimension.

My first session

The first initial session is pivotal. Hopefully it goes well and you feel comfortable with me as a person and as a professional.

However, I am not naive and I realise that occasionally a client-therapist relationship may not work for whatever reason. Sometimes, it may be something very practical like there's a mutual friendship that will bring a conflict of interest, or that the times and location are just not going to work out for you.

For this reason I offer the first session at half price, that is £20, enabling the client to make a discerned decision.

Other elements to expect in your first session are the discussion/agreement of a contract and the completion of assessment. Both are necessary for safety and legal reasons and will be explained fully during this session.
