About me and my therapy practice
My training is in Gestalt Therapy
What is the Gestalt approach?
Gestalt therapy is holistic, embracing mind, body and spirit. It encourages the individual to feel more complete and to be aware of parts of themselves that have been forgotten or denied, for whatever reason.
Gestalt working is highly creative and helps you to discover new ways of being. We work in the 'here and now', for example by looking at how you currently relate to people and situations in your life. The therapist offers support and constructive feedback that aims to assist you in exploring difficult feelings and thoughts, recognising and accepting aspects of yourself, and gaining new insights and perspectives. This in turn leads to increased self-responsibility and awareness of your potential to move forward.
Gestalt is one of the major building blocks of therapeutic theory and practice. It has been continuously developing since the early 1900s. Elements of the Gestalt approach are widely used in many different forms of counselling and psychotherapy.

My first session
Arranging a session
I offer short and long term counselling sessions. Short term can be from a minimum of 9 sessions upwards, and long term can be for several months or longer. Sessions last 50 minutes. In order for counselling to be effective and therapeutic, you do need to be comfortable with your counsellor. Therefore our first session is an assessment for both of us to see if we can work together - whether I am the right cousellor for you and whether I am able to work with you. I may suggest referring you to another colleague or organisation.
Once we agree to meet it is important that we meet regularly and that you attend and complete the sessions. If you do not contact me and miss two sessions in a row I will not be able to keep your space available to you. If you feel that you want to end the sessions early, I suggest that we meet for at least two sessions to work through the ending process and review the work completed.
Initial 30 minute session - Free. Thereafter my fee is £45 per 50-minute session for individuals , paid via internet banking. However I am happy to offer sessions at a concessionary rate based on individual's circumstances and if they are in receipt of welfare benefits
Confidentiality
Everything that happens in the sessions is confidential between us. I am required by my professional body to have regular supervison and I will sometimes discuss issues with my supervisor where your details are anonymous. The only time I will break confidence will be for ethical reasons, for example where it becomes apparent that you or other people are at risk of harm. I will of course endeavour to tell you about this beforehand.
