About me and my therapy practice
Choosing the right counsellor for YOU is a daunting task. Do you go with the profile picture and the smile, the blurb, the qualifications or the experience? We all look for different things in a person and choosing a stranger that you may want to tell your innermost thoughts and feelings to is HUGE. As part of my counselling training I was in the same position as you, choosing a counsellor who was going to be right for ME.
I have set up an established counselling practice, Breathe Counselling, which is located in a beautiful, peaceful and tranquil summerhouse in Singlewell, Gravesend. This combines the serenity and calmness I wanted to capture. For me, I feel that ‘the shed at the bottom of the garden’ is an ideal location for counselling; to feel comfortable, safe and secure. Where the change can start to happen…if the two right people are in the room.
You may have already taken that first step in recognising that you need help on your journey through life. Life experiences shape you into the person you are today; why you do the things you do and say the things you say. With counselling, and exploration, that shape can become less rigid. With knowledge comes the ability to change that shape into a more flexible one, to allow you to see things through fresh eyes enabling you to take those first tentative steps towards creating change in your life.
I offer an empathic, confidential environment so that we can build on our therapeutic relationship, allowing me to walk alongside you on your journey. You can feel listened to, understood, supported and, more importantly, heard and held.
Together we can explore your thoughts and feelings at a deeper level which can open up self-reflection and exploration of issues which may be affecting you.
Practice description
I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and have been trained Integratively.
This incorporates different modalities and theories, opening up a vast array of techniques that I am able to use in the counselling room. These methods allow you, as my client, to explore yourself. Underpinning these approaches is my relational, client-centred, compassionate and non-judgmental attitude and approach. I am aware of how our relationship with ourselves, others and society impacts on how we feel in the world. I therefore place great importance on our therapeutic relationship, allowing me to provide a safe and confidential therapeutic space.
I have gained experience in working with a diverse range of clientele. I volunteer in a hospice, where I counsel clients who are either facing bereavement, grieving a death or coming to terms with a terminal illness. I have also worked in a university and I currently work in a college, counselling young people, some of whom are facing tough issues for the first time. I have worked with people who have been victims of abuse, childhood trauma, domestic violence and everything else in-between that life throws at you.
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which ensures that we can work together ethically and safely within their framework. Details can be found at - www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework
I specialise in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), using the Rewind Technique where a client can gain closure to traumatic events. PTSD causes involuntary recall which can be in the form of nightmares, hallucinations, flashbacks and ruminations. Triggers can be smell, physical, visual or auditory. Rewind can be completed in 2-3 sessions, where involuntary recall and avoidance behaviour can stop. There is no disclosure in Rewind; there is closure without disclosure.
Together we can look at any issues you may be experiencing.
