About me and my therapy practice
Hello. A warm welcome to you.
Chances are, you are here because of hope.
Maybe you hope to feel better, or hope to make a change in your life, or maybe you are feeling hopeless and are looking for someone or something that can help you feel hopeful again.
There are lots of reasons you might be seeking a therapist; loneliness, the loss of a relationship or the loss of a loved one, seeking to change a behaviour that holds you back, or simply feeling lost, confused or stuck. Your hope and the reasons you are here matter.
I believe in your capacity to heal and grow. But maybe not everyone in your life has supported you in this. Or maybe, for you, the focus has been more about surviving. Or maybe you have learned to ignore your own inner knowing. I have some abilities and experience that can help enable your innate capacity to thrive.
At the heart of how I work, is the relationship we build together; it is the safe container that will allow us to go where you need to go. You do not need to talk about or do anything that does not feel comfortable to you. I will work with you to build a relationship of mutual trust and respect; from this foundation change is possible.
I work as a pluralistic counsellor and psychotherapist; drawing on many therapeutic styles and techniques to find ways of working that are right for you. My main orientation is humanistic, informed by person-centred, existential, gestalt, and psychodynamic ways of working, but I work with and draw from many other therapeutic styles, recognizing what is most valuable is that which accomplishes your hopes and aims from therapy.
Practice description
Essential to my style is collaboration; I don’t expect you to know how to be a client, but I do believe you instinctively know what you need, you are the expert on your life, you are the only one who has lived it. Together we can discover what is going on, what may be hindering you and what may need healing; so that the positive changes you are seeking for your life can happen. You are worthy of living your best life.
I have a particular interest in developmental trauma, which means making sense of how childhood experiences impacted you and how they influenced the ways you have learned to protect yourself to survive. My main way of working is talking therapy, where we engage in dialogue about your experiences and try to understand it. But sometimes we use talking to avoid things; I also offer creative ways of working to help us explore the space beyond words, including the use of art, visualisation, and play.
My first session
Meeting a counsellor for the first time and talking to them about your problems can sometimes feel quite scary. Will they judge me, will they be able to understand? Will they be able to help me?
Our first session will be a space for us to get to know one another and for you to get a sense of me and how I work, and if you feel comfortable with me. We will explore what brings you to therapy, what changes you hope to see and discuss whether my expertise is the right fit for you.
What is most important, is that you feel comfortable and safe speaking to me, and that I feel like the right fit for you. I may not be, and that is okay.
The first session is an hour and I charge my regular fee of £60.00 per session.
