About me and my therapy practice
Based in central York, I can help you understand your anxiety, depression, childhood & life events, relationship issues and how your 'body keeps score'. I also support life changes and those working within professional and academic settings.
Different things bring us to counselling but choosing who to work with can be hard and so I offer a 30 minute phone conversation to answer your questions and to explore how it may feel for us to work together.
About you...
Life may have thrown you some curveballs recently, or maybe past events are surfacing and you are looking for some help to work through these. I am here for you and offer a space to explore what is going on for you and, at your own pace, help you to gain insight, understanding, peace or fulfilment.
About me...
I am experienced in supporting people with a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship breakdown and understanding and working with trauma. I have worked with people encountering difficulties within thier professional or academic setting and well as helping clients navigate and understand childhood emotional neglect. I work in a trauma informed way, bringing curiosity and compassion to our work and helping acknowledge that strategies and ways of being that may have helped us in the past may no longer be doing so. Together though we can understand and make changes to this
I have twenty years life experience working in mental health, education and performing arts and have lived and worked overseas for a period of time. I work both short and long term with clients from comfortable and private rooms in the centre of York .
I recieved a Distinction in my PostgradDip in Counselling from the University of York St John. Prior to this I completed a Certificate in Counselling Practise. I believe passionately in continuing to learn and develop as a therapist and have studied further on Gestalt, attachment, domestic abuse, childhood emotional neglect and polyvagal theory.
Practice description
How we could work together
I believe that you are at the heart of the work we do but am aware that this in itself can sometimes feel quite overwhelming. I offer a compassionate, non-judgemental space for you to express yourself and can offer more focused activities to help you reach a greater understanding of yourself and the issues that have brought you to counselling. I may work creatively, helping you to access others areas of the brain to gain insights and to explore what may be hard to put into words.
I work from a relational point of view, finding that often the way we connect with ourselves and with others influences are emotions and ways of being. I also draw on Gestalt theory exploring the mind/body connection, as well as understanding the latest neuroscience and nervous system theory. I am influenced by the work of Janina Fisher, Stephen Porges Bessel van der Kalk, Gabor Mate, Kathrin Stauffer (to name a few) who help provide understanding as to why we act as we do. Exploring this further and spending time understanding who we are can leave us feeling happier and more at peace.
My first session
Our first session will be an opportunity for you to explore what has brought you to counselling and explore any aims you may have. I will also explain a little more about the way we will work together and there will be opportunity for you to ask any questions about me or our work. If you decide you would like to embark on your counselling journey together then we will arrange additional sessions. Ideally we would programme an initial set of 4 sessions weekly - calendars permitting. After this I offer flexible ways of working with the option to meet weekly, fortnightly or based around work schedules.
I am a registered member of BACP and as required by the BACP, I attend monthly supervision and abide by its Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. I am also DBS checked.
