About me and my therapy practice
I fully appreciate how difficult it can be sometimes when things appear bleak to reach out for help. Fear of sharing. Thoughts that no-one can help. Anxiety over how much will this cost? However, if we do, the likelihood of feeling better and more confident is wonderous!
I value a number of different therapeutic approaches. These include talking methods, creative interventions, Cognitive Behavioural interventions, coaching techniques - whatever meets the needs of the client best.
I offer a free, 40 minute, no obligation session which gives you the opportunity to meet me, face to face or over zoom/telephone. At this initial session I can tell you more about how I work and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions and gauge, very importantly, whether you would feel comfortable with potentially having me as your counsellor.
Covid restrictions permissible, I offer face to face in my therapy room. Telephone, zoom or where applicable walk and talk sessions.
Apart from my counselling training, I have a wide range of knowledge, skill and experience gleaned from previous roles within sport, the BBC, manufacturing, management training, fire and coastguard rescue services. I am also a volunteer facilitator for Restorative Justice and volunteer counsellor for two mental health charities.
I provide a safe, confidential space, where we have been known to have some fun along the way! If I can help, please email me in the first instance. My website is: www.nickysaltercounselling.co.uk Thank you for your time.
Practice description
A friendly practice, with a client being the prime focus. There is no judgement and the client can follow whatever path they wish to follow. Also, during a session, if a client does not wish, or at that particular time does not want to share anything or engage in a particular piece of work, that's fine.
As with all of us, there are times when we cannot make an appointed session, here, it is important, to alert each other, with as much notice as possible if this occurs.
I greatly value having an honest, open, trustworthy therapeutic relationship. This helps the client to feel safe and confident to explore their situations further than they may have done before and helps me to work professionally and constructively with them.
I am a certified ADHD providor for Young People and Adults.
My first session
Prior to the first session I email or post my counselling contract to the client. I have already explained the need to be in a quiet, confidential, comfortable space during the initial free session.
At the first session, if a zoom or telephone one, I check that the client is in that 'safe, boundaried space' that they have a drink, tissues, notebook and pen available. Whether face to face or zoom/telephone session, I then go through the contract to ensure full understanding and agreement. Where the client has the technology, the contract is signed, emailed to me, which I return with my added signature of agreement. If, a client does not have computer access then signatures are achieved through posting.
I reaffirm confidentiality, GDPR, the BACP Ethical Framework and the role of supervision. Throughout explanation , the client is able to ask any questions.
I then ask them what they would like to achieve from our sessions and if they have been in counselling before.
The initial sessions rely at this point on Personal Centred Therapy to try and make the client feel comfortable - within the counselling 'room' and to get used to me. It also gives the opportunity to gain as much information as possible to help me decide how is the best way of helping a client. For example, whether a particular therapy approach may facilitate things.
At the end of this first session, I check how the client is feeling and whether any additional thoughts have popped up that we can consider at further sessions.

About me and my therapy practice
My aim in Supervision is to provide clinical support to YOU, the supervisee towards working to best practice. I hold a pluralistic perspective, believing there is no 'best' way of supervising. Different supervisees need different things at different times. I value a number of therapeutic approaches. These include talking methods, creative interventions, Cognitive Behavioural interventions, coaching techniques. I also want to get to know you as a person and understand you in the context of your life as a whole. Counselling not only involves you as a professional counsellor, you also bring yourself and your life experiencess to the work that you do with your clients. I see part of my roles as understanding you as a person and understanding the things that may impact your work, so that I can protect you and your clients and also offer you support and help in your counselling work. It is important that we can have open and honest discussions and that you feel comfortable to bring not only your successes, but your mistakes as well. We all make them! I hope you will find supervision a safe enough space to bring these, so that we can work together in making the best version of 'you'. I offer a free, forty minute, no obligation session which gives you the opportunity to come and meet with me, or alternatively this can be done over zoom, to talk about what you would hope to get from supervision. At this initial session I can tell you more about how I work and what I can offer to you in supervision. This meeting will give you the opportunity of deciding whether you feel comfortable with me.
