About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Richard, and I would like to welcome you to my profile. As an online and telephone counsellor I offer accessible sessions across the UK. In my practice I choose to use both psychodynamic counselling and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and further, take a particular interest in making my practice autism-friendly. I can provide you with a confidential and welcoming space which is free from judgement, where you can talk about whatever you find is troubling you.

Our sessions can help you to explore events which have distressed you in the past which, while the links might not be immediately apparent, can continue to trouble you in the present. As a result, you might find yourself repeating and reliving unwanted patterns, or feeling almost trapped in situations which you find difficult to resolve. There may not be any obviously identifiable problems at all, yet deep-seated issues can leave you feeling that something just isn't right.

The way that we work together forms an essential part of effective therapy, and through a caring and compassionate approach I can help you to explore issues at your own pace. We will look to give you a greater understanding and integration of the different parts of your self, including the parts which can be uncomfortable to acknowledge, and help you to identify and start to live the life that is important to you.

I feel the psychodynamic and ACT approaches complement each other extremely well. Psychodynamic counselling primarily allows for deep dives into your experiences both past and present, as the therapeutic relationship brings awareness of your unconscious self in a manageable way. ACT then builds upon this with much more active interventions, and these can guide you on the path to leading a life that is meaningful for you whilst also learning to embrace its inevitable pain. ACT teaches us that, through mindful action rooted in our core values, we can effectively navigate life's challenges and unwanted experiences.

Practice description

I am currently in my fifth year of private practice, after completing my undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Chichester followed by a postgraduate diploma in psychodynamic psychotherapeutic counselling from the University of Brighton.

And my practice as a trained counsellor is supported by my background of working across a diverse range of mental health and caring environments.

Through the NHS, charitable, and private healthcare and education sectors, I am experienced in working with both children and adults. I have supported people who are living with autism, ADHD/ADD, traumatic brain injuries, psychosis, stress, loss, depression, and anxiety - and provided a safe space to sit with feelings of being angry, upset, stuck, or confused.

I am a registered member of the BACP, with my practice underpinned by professional ethics, ongoing supervision, and continual professional development. I also hold clean, enhanced DBS certification for working with children and adults and am subscribed to the DBS Update Service which ensures that this is continually up to date.

I work to the practice of weekly 50-minute sessions, held on the same day and at the same time each week. I believe that the reliability and consistency that comes with having regular sessions in this way is an important part of the therapeutic process.

There is no set number of counselling sessions, instead they take the form of an ongoing arrangement. Whilst the counselling I practice is open-ended and can often span a year or more, short terms of six months or fewer are also effective.

The fee for each counselling session is £50, whilst I also hold a limited number of concessionary spaces for those who are seeking this, where the fee for each counselling session is £30.

And you can be at home, in the office, on a lunch break, at college, walking, in the car (parked!) - just as long as it's safe and confidential, you and I can do our best to find a way to make sure your sessions happen.

My first session

Our first meeting will be an initial consultation, which is a combined assessment and 'getting-to-know-you' session. It will be used to explore why you are looking for counselling now and what you might like to talk about, along with some more basic information.

Whilst it is quite a structured session, it is a space for you to talk freely and ask any questions that you may have.

It will also give us the opportunity to see how we might work together. It is important that your needs are being met when you are engaging in counselling, and finding the right counsellor for you is essential for that.

The fee for a 50 minute initial consultation is £25, with there being no obligation to take up further sessions. If we feel that we have a good therapeutic ‘fit’ and you would like to arrange ongoing sessions, we can do so on the day; however, you may feel that you need to take more time to think it over, and that’s ok - it is important that you feel comfortable with your decision.

I hope that this overview provides enough guidance to help you make an informed choice, but if you find you have any questions that you would like to ask please do get in contact and I will be happy to help.
