About me and my therapy practice
Having trained as an Integrative Counsellor, I am able to draw on my knowledge and experience of various counselling theories in order to find the most appropriate way of working with you. Having had first hand experience of being the client in a counselling relationship, I am only too aware of how daunting it can feel when looking for the right person to accompany you on your journey. My aim is to try to see and experience the world as it is for you, providing a safe and non-judgemental environment in which you can explore your reasons for coming to counselling. I am able to offer both short and long term work depending on what it is that you brings you to counselling. .
I work on a 1-1 basis with a range of clients both private practice. Each session is 50 minutes and can be either face to face, or telephone/video counselling. Prior to our first session, I would suggest a brief phone conversation, whereby you can tell me a bit about what brings you to counselling, and together we can decide whether I am the right person to support you. Initially I would look to arrange 6 sessions(although this is not a definite) at which point we will assess our work together.
I believe that you, the client, are the expert in your own world and that you are capable of discovering, processing and healing yourself in order to find a happier, healthier way of being. However, sometimes we can become stuck in life (for a variety of reasons), and it is at this time that it is important to reach out and find the support we need to address this. As your counsellor, I would hope to be this support for you.
Practice description
I offer a variety of counselling practices starting from a Person-Centred/Humanistic approach, and drawing on my knowledge and experience of using Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Solution-focused and CBT theories.
I work in both short term, solution-focused counselling and also offer longer term/open ended work, seeing clients who present with a variety of issues such as anxiety, low mood, depression, low self-esteem, impulsive behaviours and trauma.
I have a specialist interest in attachment theory; how our childhood relationships, particularly those with our parents/care givers, impact the way we develop, and inform so much of our thinking and patterns of behaviour. Examples of how poor early attachment may be showing itself in your life could be: feelings of low self-esteem, difficulty with intimacy, relying on others to make you feel good, addictions, difficulty maintaining relationships, self-destructive behaviours, low mood and depression.
Trauma is another area I am interested in. It is a word many associate with events such as war, abuse or loss. However, many of us may have experienced traumatic times/experiences in our lives and might be suffering from the symptoms of undiagnosed trauma. Trauma might be issues such as unresolved childhood issues, a difficult relationship, having your feelings constantly dismissed and bullying. Signs and symptoms that you may be living with unresolved trauma could be: living with a constant feeling of fear but not knowing why, difficulty establishing/maintaining relationships, a need to feel in control, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, difficulty believing in yourself, trouble concentrating, poor sleep, over-eating, obsessive behaviours and impulsive behaviours.
If any of the above resonates with you, or indeed you have other areas in your life which you wish to explore, then please do get in touch for a brief (free) initial phone conversation.
My first session
Our first session will be 50 minutes, and will include a small amount of form filling(this is kept to a minimum). I will then tell you a little bit about the way I work, allowing time for you to ask any questions. By this stage, I hope that you will be feeling more relaxed, and comfortable to start talking about your reasons for coming to counselling at this time.
I firmly believe that the key to success in counselling lies in the rapport between Counsellor and Client. My hope is that we will be able to establish a strong, trusting relationship in which we can work together. If at any time we feel that I am not the right person to support you on your journey, it is important that this is raised, and I will help you to move on.
