About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist based in Clapham, SW12. My clinic is located just three minutes’ walk from Clapham South tube station and offers a calm, confidential space in which to discuss whatever is troubling you.

Psychotherapy can help when life seems either “too much” or “not enough”—or perhaps both at once. Though genetics can play a part, it is very likely that your past and present experiences will also be significant factors. You may find yourself feeling:

* Anxious or stressed.

* Depressed, flat, or somehow empty.

* Unable to recover from a loss.

* Lonely and struggling to form friendships.

* As though you’re always in conflict with other people.

* Troubled by intrusive thoughts or memories.

* Repeatedly drawn to unsatisfying and possibly self-destructive behaviours.

* Physical symptoms that don’t seem to have a medical explanation.

Please feel welcome to contact me if you relate to any of the above. Then we can arrange an initial consultation, which will allow me to find out a bit more about you - and, most importantly, for you to decide whether you are comfortable working with me. The initial consultation costs £30.

I am also a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council and adhere to their ethical standards.

Practice description

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist qualified to work with adults. Following introductory studies at the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust, I completed my clinical qualification in psychodynamic psychotherapy at WPF Therapy. In addition to my private practice, I work in the NHS as an honorary psychotherapist for Southwark PCMHT. I am currently training in transference-focused psychotherapy, a psychoanalytically informed treatment specifically tailored for personality disorders.

My first session

Contacting a therapist is a big step that can cause anxiety in itself, which is natural. The first session lasts for 50 minutes and is more like a consultation. It is a chance for us to get to know each other and for you to decide whether you are comfortable working with me. I will encourage you to talk about what has led you to seek therapy and what you hope to achieve from it. I will also ask some questions to help me get a better picture of your life, including relationships past and present. Equally, you should feel free to ask me any questions about therapy that come to mind. This initial consultation costs £35.

There is no obligation to continue with therapy after the first session, and we may agree to meet together for another consultation before committing to a regular time together. Subsequent sessions last for 50 minutes and take place at the same time each week.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an exploratory process which works from the presumption that difficulties can arise from inner, less conscious conflict – between, for example, our desires and fears. If awareness of a conflict is too painful, the mind is likely to create defences to keep it out of awareness. Defences may be helpful initially, but they can lead to rigidity in thought and behaviour, not to mention distress. I see my job as bringing, with empathy and respect, such conflicts into awareness, so that you can feel greater agency in your life and less symptomatic distress.

Given the exploratory nature of the work, I do not take an "active" approach – I simply ask that you speak openly and honestly about whatever is on your mind, including your reactions to me and the therapy process. We will then reflect on this material together to gain a better understanding of your difficulties. Studies have shown that the benefits from therapy tend to manifest from around the six-month mark; this is not to say that it won't help sooner, but that you should expect some investment of time.
