About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified psychodynamic therapist offering a safe, relational and non-judgmental space to help you unravel your difficulties. Individual psychotherapy provides a unique opportunity to talk about anxieties, concerns, symptoms or traumas in complete privacy. Therapy can be transformative, providing a sense of relief, clarity and renewed hopefulness. I have more than 30 years’ experience working with adults and young people from 13 to 80-plus in a variety of settings.
I work psychodynamically with issues such as relationships, bereavement, work stress, anxiety and depression, disability and gender challenges. I have experience of working with autism and ADHD. Work may be short, for just a few sessions or short consultation, or longer-term. It is always tailored to your specific needs and wishes.
About Alison Harvey MBACP, MSt (Oxon).
I hold a Master’s in Psychodynamic Practice (Distinction) from the University of Oxford following an exacting four-year training. I had another four years’ training before that, both in the UK and internationally, attaining a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and undertaking a trauma and resilience programme at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I am a former City executive with many years’ experience of high-pressure workplaces in the UK and abroad. I am an accredited mediator.
Alongside my private practice, I work as a psychotherapist at a flagship NHS clinic with patients who have suffered complex trauma. I also worked as a counsellor in multiple agencies for both adults and young people for a number of years. Work included counselling refugee clients for the Tavistock/British Red Cross and the Refugee Council. I aim to offer a safe, inclusive space for all.
Practice description
Psychodynamic therapy is a powerful tool to effect change at the deepest level and help you to a more fulfilled life. I work in a relational way, which means I am not a coldly analytical figure in the room, but a person with warmth with whom you may feel safe to explore your innermost thoughts.
Psychodynamic therapy is different to humanistic counselling, which sees the client as holding all the answers to their problems. Psychodynamic therapy is more probing, and stresses the significance of earliest childhood experiences, which you may have no conscious memory of, and how they can continue to affect us during adulthood. Talking about your difficulties can help you understand how your past influences the present ¬– and how your future may be changed for the better. Some people find psychodynamic therapy helps when CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), which focuses on symptoms rather than the cause, has not worked. Therapy does not help everybody, but a willingness and a motivation to unpick difficulties is likely to stand you in good stead. Therapy can be short or long, depending on your needs and wishes.
In-person and remote sessions
Sessions are generally held at the same time each week and last 50 minutes. This is the same for face-to-face or online work.
In-person sessions take place in quiet, comfortable rooms in Wimpole St, W1 (parallel with Harley Street and close to Baker Street and Oxford Circus tube lines); the City (one-minute’s walk from City Thameslink station); or St Albans (walking distance St Albans City station). All locations are buildings dedicated to talking therapies.
Online sessions using Zoom offer easier access to therapy, but you will need a secure and private setting where you can talk freely during our time together.
