About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Amy.
Coming to counselling and opening up to a complete stranger about things you may have never discussed before can be hugely daunting! I aim to make the process as easy, comfortable (and occasionally even fun) as possible while getting you to where you want to be.
I have been working with people with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, early life trauma (and for some a wish to talk about a feeling but without necessarily knowing what it is but something simply doesn't quite feel right) for 20 years.
The idea of opening up to a complete stranger about things you may have kept inside for many years or that you may not understand in terms of how you are feeling can feel hugely daunting.
My aim is to put the people I work with at ease as quickly as possible while also helping them to untangle and understand why they will be feeling or acting in certain ways. We often behave in ways which we see as not 'rational' or that don't seem to make sense. My job is to help to understand the bit that doesn't seem to make sense.
The core of my training was in the psychodynamic method of counselling which involves looking at how our emotions and ways of viewing ourselves are shaped by experience and relationships throughout our lifetimes. In fact often our ways of coping that we develop from childhood and which are seemingly entrenched no longer work and are in need of looking at from a fresh perspective in order to make a change and get to where we want to be.
Practice description
I offer both online and in-person therapy at my practice in Finsbury Park, North London.
I offer weekly or fortnightly sessions and sessions are 50 minutes long.
Sessions are tailored individually depending on clients needs and the approach to sessions will be discussed in the first session.
My first session
Many people I work with are very nervous coming to the first session and I will try to put you at ease as much as I can. I always offer a cuppa initially!
The first session is really a getting to know one another session. I will often ask a range of questions about you and past experiences or events which have led you to seek counselling.
We will use the first session to decide upon an approach which will suit you and choose some initial targets in terms of what you would like to achieve in the sessions.
