About me and my therapy practice
Offering you a protected space to talk, and be carefully listened to, is at the heart of my approach to counselling and psychotherapy. This is the foundation of a therapeutic relationship within which you can work through difficulties, address trauma, understand and care for yourself better, and enliven your connection with yourself and others.
But sometimes it isn't so easy to find the words, and sometimes it can feel like words are part of the problem, masking our real selves.
My specialist area is in working with creative and body-oriented approaches to help you to express yourself without words, enabling you to find and empower your authentic self.
Using clay, pencils and paints, collage, imaginal interventions or using small figures to create a world in the sand - creative methods can express the inexpressible, show us our true reality and tap into surprising insight, as well as providing important processes of transition through grief and loss.
Based on my years of training and experience providing therapeutic bodywork, I teach practices to help you tune into your own body, mindfully exploring your sensations and developing this inner story through movement. In this profound way of working, I am present as a non-judgemental witness, not interpreting but holding a safe space to allow you to develop your own understanding. This approach can be particularly effective in working with physical symptoms.
It is always a client’s choice to work in ways that they are comfortable with and find useful.
I am committed to non-discriminatory practice and recognise the active ingredients of privilege, marginalisation, and collective experience in the process of therapy.
Together we will seek out what you need in order to find new clarity, empowerment and the possibility of joy.
Practice description
My in-person practice is based in Alnwick and in Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne where I have a beautiful space for movement work.
I offer a limited number of sessions at a reduced rate as part of my commitment to make my practice fair and accessible.
Both locations have stairs leading to the therapy room. If this presents a barrier for you, please get in touch so that we can find alternative arrangements.
I sometimes offer body-oriented therapy workshops - please get in touch if you would like further information.
My training background
I hold a level 7 diploma in Psychotherapy and a diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, involving 4 years of training and practice at the Northern Guild.
My core theoretical model is Transactional Analysis and I also draw on Person-centred principles, on Jungian psychology, Psychodynamic psychotherapy and current models of therapy for bereavement and trauma.
I have an MSc in Complementary Therapies with a specialisation in Bodywork, from the School of Integrated Health, University of Westminster, having worked for many years as a bodywork therapist and studying Process Work and Authentic Movement.
My first session
You are welcome to contact me with any questions or to arrange a brief chat on the phone.
I offer an initial appointment at my standard rate which gives us the opportunity to meet and for you to tell me about your reasons for seeking therapy. I will ask you some background questions to enable me to make an assessment and we can decide together if I am the right therapist for you at this time.
In deciding to proceed, we would confirm a weekly appointment and an appropriate timescale - sometimes 4-6 weeks are enough to give you the tools to move forward, at other times, we would have an open ended agreement with regular reviews, allowing longer term work – this may be necessary to address deeper trauma, losses that have had a profound impact, or deeply held patterns which are no longer working for you.
I am happy to discuss any initial questions you may have about counselling, on the phone, ahead of making an appointment. My office hours are Tuesday-Saturday and I endeavour to reply to messages within 2 working days.
