About me and my therapy practice

Life can be tough, sometimes it can take us to breaking point.

Therapy can help when life feels overwhelming. You could find yourself in a difficult emotional situation due to a bereavement, trauma, a broken relationship or something more deeply rooted and personal. You may be depressed, angry, anxious or lonely without fully understanding the cause of your feelings. You may need a space in which to be heard without judgement. I can provide that space.

In the therapy room or online, together we will reflect on your current and past experiences. We will explore your thought patterns, where they come from and how they effect your mind and body. Through this work we will aim to improve emotional wellbeing and mental health (which often also impacts physical health). I believe, that with the right support, everyone has the ability to heal and lead a happy and fulfilling life.

I deliver non-judgemental, sex-positive, LGBTQI+ positive, faith-positive counselling.

My training is as an “Integrative” Counsellor. This means I use insights and techniques from several different schools of counselling. However the heart of my practice is “person-centred” which means that I believe that you are the expert in your life: Deep down, you instinctively know what you need in order to grow and change for the better.

My job is to help you reflect and discover the answers you already have (even if that is hard to believe right now).

I specialise in the areas of trauma, bereavement, and low self-esteem but work across a range of issues.

I have delivered counselling for Cruse Bereavement Care & Ellenor Hospice.

Practice description

I usually work in blocks of 6 sessions, so we would initially work together for 6, 12 or 18 sessions (or longer term if needed, but I would always discuss progress every 6 or 12 sessions).

One important note about bereavement work: I would recommend leaving it until at least three months after the date of the bereavement.  Those first few months are usually extremely difficult, and no amount of therapy can take away that pain. The exception to this would be after a sudden or traumatic death, when you may need more immediate help to process the loss...

For face to face work: Please note that my counselling room does not currently have wheelchair access and the household does include cats (which will be locked away during counselling sessions, but allergies may still be triggered!).

My first session

On our first session I will explain the type of counselling I offer and we will discuss the Contract that you will sign if you wish to work with me (I would be happy to email this to you in advance of the first session if you prefer).

After the first session you can decide if you think we could work together. There is no pressure on your decision. There are several reasons why a counsellor and a client may not "fit" and it is important to make sure you find someone with whom you are comfortable. (For example, if a counsellor reminds you of a school teacher who bullied you it may be easier to find another counsellor than to work through the issues this brings up.)

If you have read this far, you clearly want change in your life - email or phone to see if I can help you.

Practice description

Webcam Counselling: We will meet on Zoom at a time that we have previously arranged. Sessions are 50 minutes in length. Being able to see your counsellor gives you some of the benefits of face-to-face counselling but with the convenience of online therapy. A disadvantage of webcam counselling is that you need a private room where you will not be overheard.

Telephone counselling: An advantage of telephone counselling is that non-verbal communication can be carried in your tone of voice or the pace of speech which can be picked up by your counsellor. A disadvantage of telephone counselling is that you need a private room where you will not be overheard.

Text Chat: Your session is 50 minutes (and the text remains available afterwards, allowing you to review what both you and I said). This gives you the opportunity to clarify any uncertainties you may have from your session and also leaves you with something to go back to as you process the information. You do not need a webcam or computer/laptop for this type of counselling.

Email counselling: Counselling using email offers you the opportunity to consider what you wish to say before you send it as well as time between exchanges to reflect on the information you have received. A consideration of email counselling is the time delay between your mail and the return mail - this may not be the best way of working if you are in urgent distress.

My local therapy room has closed, I now work exclusively online and by telephone (unless you want to travel out to Dartford!).

I switched to working online during the Pandemic and (after receiving the appropriate training) discovered that there are several advantages to this way of working (as well as some challenges).

Being able to be at home, in your own space can make it easier to open up about your problems. (As long as you have private space to talk.)

Research has shown that online work is equally as effective as working face-to-face, and I warmly recommend that you give it a try.
