About me and my therapy practice
"With Emilia's help, I was able to better understand how past events have shaped me and my view of the world, and work through to a place where I am much happier as a person and confident about my life moving forwards."
Offering BACP accredited counselling and psychotherapy, I am an ex-City lawyer. Harnessing a unique approach to counselling and psychotherapy, that draws on in-depth education within the mental health field, as well as personal experience within a corporate legal background. Drawing upon relational and psychoanalytic theories, the focus is always on ensuring a safe, supportive and compassionate environment where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences, integrating the benefits of our work.
Accreditation by the BACP means my counselling and psychotherapy practice has been assessed by it and meets a higher standard of competence.
I offer individual counselling and psychotherapy to adults from 18 years of age, including professionals in person at London Bridge on Thursdays and other times in Tunbridge Wells, as well as online.
Before training as a therapist, I worked as a lawyer in the City and internationally for some of the most well known financial institutions and law firms so I can empathise and relate to the unique stresses and demands of these unique corporate environments.
I am warm, empathic and insightful and offer a reflective and creative space that can allow thoughts, feelings and experiences to be understood and thought about together.
I am interested in an individual's true story and how it can begin to emerge in a space that is safe and supportive and where a greater sense of self can be found, to feel more whole and expressive.
If you would like to know more about me and how we might work together please feel free to get in touch to arrange a brief call or first consultation or visit my website at emiliayaucounselling.com.
Practice description
I work adapting to the needs of my clients and use a number of ways to benefit them:
I work psychodynamically which means understanding the relationship between how the unconscious internal mind affects the external world.
I apply attachment theory to help understand how relationship bonds formed with early caregivers affect present relationships.
I use Jungian psychology in ways such as exploring the shadow side of individuals, feminine and masculine aspects of personality where there is imbalance, phantasies and dreams.
I use the latest findings that have come out of neuroscience working with the Polyvagal nerve and assisting clients to tune into their anchors to help them feel more safe and secure in themselves.
My therapeutic approach has the dual effect of a growing self - awareness which can lead to enough space to make different choices that aren't unconscious, and the experience of being heard and understood which can lead to a greater sense of self and worth.
My first session
In our first consultation we will discuss what has led you to seek counselling and psychotherapy, I will start to get to you know. I generally invite clients to think about whether they would like to work with me over the first couple of consultations, as I would do too.
Prior to our first meeting I would send you a questionnaire to fill in about your background and history.
We would then agree a fixed time to meet on a weekly basis if you'd like to work together that you can commit to on a regular basis. As the counselling and psychotherapy space is held for you regularly any missed or cancelled sessions would still need to be paid for.
Although work is open-ended you are free to end counselling and psychotherapy when you wish, though I would encourage you to discuss with me any difficulties that might be arising for you before you do so.
Ideally I would ask for two weeks' notice so we can work towards the experience of a 'good ending' of the counselling and psychotherapy for you together.
