About me and my therapy practice
I’m Tom and I currently provide 1:1 therapy for individuals and couples. I often see that intense emotions can make it difficult to be effective in daily life, and so I specialise in emotion regulation. My main areas of interest include working with anxiety, depression, anger management, borderline personality disorder, addictive behaviours, and working with couples. I have over 10 years experience working in a range of therapeutic settings. My recent work experience includes the Priory Hospital in North London, and the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Marylebone.
I have a purpose built therapy room located in Redbourn, which is just outside St Albans. Its a quiet and comfortable space which is easily accessible with plentiful parking.
My approach to therapy is integrative, which allows me to draw from a range of skills depending on your needs. Some situations require listening with room to gain understanding, and others require practical skills to overcome. My overall style is friendly, empathic, and down to earth.
I have additional training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). The main goals of DBT are to find healthy ways to manage emotions and improve relationships with others. I'm currently studying for a 2 year postgraduate diploma in DBT with Bangor University towards accreditation. I’m also a COSRT registered relationship & psychosexual therapist. I have completed an extensive 2 year postgraduate diploma in relationship & psychosexual therapy with CICS.
Practice description
One of the things that works in therapy is a trusting relationship and I offer a confidential space for this to develop.
If you are experiencing difficulty with emotions, we work together to understand and develop techniques towards balance. This sometimes involves alternative ways of thinking, behaving, or learning new effective strategies.
If you think that you have addictive behaviours - either alcohol/drugs or any other pattern of problematic behaviour - I would offer you an individual service depending on your needs. I have extensive experience working in a treatment centre for addiction and am passionate about offering a non-judgemental and flexible approach.
My first session
I appreciate that finding the right therapist can be challenging. I offer a free 15 minute phone or zoom consultation to discuss if we can work together, and if my skills are a suitable fit. During the first session, we would discuss how the process works, what your expectations are, and eventually establish your goals and how best to proceed. I offer both long and short term therapy, which is usually weekly. I can offer either face to face sessions or online via zoom.
What I can help with
Addictions, Anger management, Anxiety, Bereavement, Depression, Identity issues, Loss, Men's issues, Post-traumatic stress, Relationships, Self esteem, Self-harm, Stress, Trauma, Work related issues
