About me and my therapy practice

If you’re reading this, there’s something on your mind now about yourself, your relationships, anxiety, depression, bereavement or problems at work. I work with men who have suffered in silence because ‘that’s what men do’. I work with women who want to talk in a space where they can be their true selves. This might be the right time to work with me, a counsellor who will take your problems seriously and won’t judge you. I’m a registered BACP member and I was an Educational Psychologist for over 20 years.

Research shows that good counselling depends on the quality of the therapeutic relationship. That’s why I offer Person-Centred counselling, based on evidence that empathy and care make a good relationship and help you to grow. I work to create a confidential, safe place for you to experience compassion for who you are and help you find a new outlook on life.

You will find me genuine, informal but professional. You may be worried about the first counselling session and I will help you to feel comfortable. Sometimes you might know exactly what you want to work on, or it might help to proceed gently together because you are not sure what is going on for you. As our work progresses, I’ll encourage you to take more of a lead in what we work on. I will check that we are working at a pace that feels right for you.

I usually suggest six sessions as a good way to start the process. You are free to stop at any point without explaining why. Some clients work with me long term. Our work can be open ended.

Practice description

I provide counselling for anxiety, depression, bereavement and grief, existential concerns, stressful life changes and for people to explore their own experience of neurodivergency, like autism and ADHD. In all these areas, my approach is to respect each client’s individuality. Person-centred counselling avoids grouping people into categories.

You may experience anxiety reinforced by an inner critic, telling you that you are no good. Anxiety like this can be related to complex traumas from earlier life and I will work with you to explore your unique experience.

You may have been through family problems and had feelings that you didn’t have a chance to process. Were you told ‘everything is OK’ when it clearly wasn’t? Were you told not to cry, when you just wanted to be held? Feelings like this can get buried and expressed as depression.

You may have experienced the loss of a special person in your life through death and I can provide bereavement counselling. Loss also takes many other forms; I work with loss through enforced separation, loss of a way of life, or loss of an imagined or potential life.

You may feel unmotivated and wonder what is the point of your life. I work with clients to explore these issues and work towards finding meaning.

I also work with clients whose life circumstances change. Half of all marriages and partnerships end in separation or divorce. You may be wondering about your current relationship or dealing with life after a break-up.

Perhaps you have recently retired or you have been forced out of a job you loved through redundancy, accident or illness. Some transitions are natural, like getting older or children growing up and leaving home, but they can still be difficult.

I work with men who sometimes carry their problems around, being strong on the outside, leaving the talking to others. When I work with men, they often find it’s a relief to finally let it all out and open up to change, rather than closing down or manning up just to fit in.

My first session

I offer a free 30 minute phone consultation. This is a chance for you to see if you'd like to work with me. I'll introduce myself and tell you how I work. I'll ask you what you hope to get from counselling.

If it feels right to you, we'll arrange a first appointment, at which I'll explain about confidentiality and privacy. My way of working is informal and calm. I'll take time getting to know you and why you are looking for support now, at this moment in your life. It's important to give you time to build up your trust in me, so I will allow you the space you need. If you're not sure how to start, I'll help you.

What I can help with

Abuse, ADD / ADHD, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Depression, Health related issues, Life coaching, Loss, Men's issues, Neurodiversity, Obsessions, Post-traumatic stress, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Self-harm, Sexuality, Spirituality, Stress, Trauma, Work related issues
