About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Courtney. The way I work prioritises the relationship we form. I know everyone has special unique qualities and viewpoints and I believe these need to be sensed, seen, heard and responded to. A large part of my work lies in doing this to the best of my ability.
The relationship we form will be the foundation upon which we will try to enable growth and change. We will work together to explore the problems and challenges that are affecting you and might look at how you respond to people, or stress, or how you are in relationships, amongst other things. We might look at your past, your present or future aims and try to identify where unhelpful responses or behaviours might be noticed, adapted or eliminated. There are ways in which dreams, art or music might be used to explore areas of your life.
However we work, I will prioritise you, your needs and your goals with the respect, empathy and open mind, that you are deserving of and entitled to.
I live with health concerns and have many experiences around difference and this has deeply informed the way I work; I see that we all carry issues and differences that impact upon us over the course of our lives and I feel well suited to working with others who have experienced this in their own unique way. This is why my approach is integrative; one size does not fit all and having a variety of methods to draw from means we can work together to discover what works best for you.
My first session
I initially provide a free 30 minute phone call or Zoom session, where I can get an idea of what you're looking for and explain a little about how I work. It also gives you a chance to get a feel for me and a chance to ask me anything you want to about counselling.
Our first actual session is not indicative of the ones that follow! This is because during our first session I find it necessary to find out in more depth the main reasons you've sought counselling and what you want to gain from it.
I like to build up a picture of who you are, your history and your needs.
This means that you have to answer many more questions than occur in a subsequent sessions.
I also take a few details, such as your contact details, age, gender disability etc which I store securely.
At this stage we will agree to continue or pause while you decide what you feel is best for you.
